Nick Faldo's Equipment

Shah G

Recommended Posts

He did sign with Adams in the late 90s but only ever played a few Adams clubs. In fairness, they didn't actually make all that many at the time. At Birkdale in '98 he was sporting an Adams bag - but had what looked like the same set of Mizunos that he won the Masters with a couple of years earlier in it along with some Mizuno wedges.

He did play that dodgy Adams driver though - the xxxN neutral-faced thing - and a Tight Lies Tour 3 wood before the promised line of Faldo signature irons fell through and he took his leave to go it alone.

Seeing Faldo with anything other than a Mizuno blade with a slab of lead tape on it still looks wrong to my eye.

Incidentally, those MS-1s are a strange-looking club. The only set I've ever seen in peron had a ludicrous 'Authorised for Touring Professional Use' stamping (or something similar) all over them and were the most alarmingly square set of irons I've ever seen. Very odd.

That's the fellas. Faldo's set, as I remember, were mercifully missing all the gumph.

He designed a set of wedges for Adams too, I had a 56 degree. Kind of odd looking wedge to be honest, but I liked it.

Absolutely right,

i've gone to many european tour events and British opens, in fact some of my friends have played in the opens and i've had chances to watch many players hit shots behind the ropes and the majority of guys now would not break 80 using the equipment of 20 years ago. The story of Brandt Snedeker is a great example of a contempory player not being half the ball striker compared to his contempories in the previous generation.

Its a shame because its become harder to distinguish the quality from the chaff with such forgiving equipment.

check this link for the story on Snedeker, [url="http://www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/pga/2007-07-12-oldclubs_N.htm"]http://www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/pga/20...-oldclubs_N.htm[/url]

Once again great thread about Faldo, bringing back a lot of memories. My favourite one was the 1989 Suntory World Match Play Championship. Woosnam vs. Faldo was a fantastic battle, right to the 18th hole.

I've been trying to get a hold a video of the tournament, since I've lost mine. Can't find an official video or anything?
Perhaps some of you guys can help me out?

Hi all,
Ah Sir Nick Faldo, what a British Golfing ICON.

He plays TM because he is a key member of the Marketing Team.
[sup]Quote[/sup]
As a TMaG team member Faldo will contribute in a variety of ways. In addition to playing TaylorMade® clubs and balls and wearing adidas Golf apparel and footwear, he will be involved in the design and testing of TMaG products. He will also act as a sounding board on marketing and advertising campaigns, help evaluate the talent of up-and-coming players, contribute content to TMaG's consumer websites, and collaborate in the upcoming redesign of the golf range at TMaG headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.
[sup]Unquote

[/sup]I would love if he played Mizuno again, but Mizuno is a small Company in terms of Taylor Made / Nike etc

We still have great players this side of the pond, but not with the same DESIRE !!

Gone are the days, most people seem to be money orientated.

Ron

Regarding Nick's Ping's I'm sure he used them to shot a 62 at Sunningdale in '86 he then complained they went to straight! Also he used a Maxfli Ht balata in the '89 or '88 Open (it was on ESPN classic recently). He also used a B60 style Scotty (with a double bend shaft) during a Thailand event in the mid late '90's. The one Tiger beat Ernie Els on the last day. He recently said a lot of his designs were in the TM Tour Preferred irons which means he got his feet under the table very quickly at TM considering the staff talent they have.

I've always liked Faldo. Although he isn't very friendly when you see him at golf tournaments. But then again it wasn't his first day being famous. I have been fortunate when I was younger to have begged my way to getting a Rextar and a Precept tour ball from his caddy Fanny. When Faldo came to TPC Sawgrass he would always play the back 9 alone on Wednesday. I followed him with about two other spectators since nobody liked him. Pretty cool with no crowds. I was walking next to him and I asked if i could look at his pw. He just handed it to me and once I was finished I handed it back to him. Huge grips! Im a huge golfer so to hold a club belonging to a 6 time major winner well thats just amazing. TP-19's

Interesting. Particularly what looks to be a large box of TPA putter grips under the bench. Obviously a favourite grip.

Not sure about the garms though Nick. I wouldn't polish my car with the torn up remnants of that shirt.

Here is a great Mizuno article. Especially the bit "Even though we thought every single club was identical, he (Faldo) could find something in them. The differences must have been minute. On another occasion we made clubs for him on the Tour truck. Nick started swinging, just holding the shafts, and said the 6-iron was a bit short. When we checked, it was three millimetres short." Brilliant !

I recognise that plasterwork.

Those drivers were interesting things (as pictured above). Faldo used a very similar one to win at St Andrews in 1990. I had a knock with one many moons ago that a local pro had gotten his hands on. Very solid-feeling and extremely low spin - which was quite unusual back in those days. Compared to a Taylor Made wood or one of the Mizuno Hot Metal woods it was deeper faced and gave a much lower, flatter flight. Lovely chunky shape to them too. Reminiscent of a nice deep faced persimmon.

Does anybody know what model 5-wood this is that Faldo was using in the 1995 British Open !? He was contracted with Mizuno and was using T-Zoid's the following year.

Faldo1995.jpg

*Note how stiff that shaft must be with the first step being so close to the hosel !?

Taylor Made?

Possible, this was in the same tournament and presume is his 3-wood...........a Taylor Made Burner.

Dunno. Could be one of the old (Mizuno)Tour Proven metalwoods circa '92-'93. Nice little club with a single rail on the sole.
