Diawa Advisor DG 8401 irons in hand pics and dilemma

I have absolutely exhausted myself searching for information on these irons. I am currently negotiating for a mint set of Diawa Advisor DG 8401 irons. I can't find 1 scintilla of info on these and I am hoping this vast community of experts and experience can help.

Thanks for that. I guess I glossed over that post. Brief mention of the 8401 and little info directly about them. So my assumption is a cast carbon head with progressive offset?

True that JAG. Those are awesome. There was a set on the bay about 7 months ago that fetched around $240. They weren't in that good of condition though. I seeked out NRJyzr on here in the blades thread. He had a plethora of information in regards to this set

1982 or 1983. The course I worked at in that time frame dealt with Diawa and a couple of guys in the shop played them. High end (for that day) and were forged steel. Very little offset which was common then. The woods were gorgeous persimmon. Sharp leading edge and little bounce.

JAG, I'm afraid i dont know much about these Daiwas. They're a square toe variation of the 8601s and 8201s, the DG in the name indicating the design talents of one David Graham. The Daiwas are highly regarded, the DG-273 being more well known, such as I've seen.

 

With the early 80s timeline mentioned by Socrates, they may well be in the arena of FG-17s for lofts, the 20-30-50 2i-5i-PW.

Well if anyone cares, I got the irons today. When I say they are brand new......I mean they are BRAND NEW!!!!! Never been hit. Original plastic sleeves on heads and green victory grips(still tacky). Heck, even the Diawa warranty envelope with the offer for 18 personalized shaft labels were included.

 

Holy moly, what the heck do I do now? I though they were “like new” so I wouldn’t feel guilty playing em. But when I tell you these things are MINT, I mean they are M-I-N-T mint! The only thing missing is an original Diawa box.....if said box ever existed.

 

So to the group.......would you play em?

I've come across a few sets of brand new mizuno ms in my time. I have a set I haven't hit because I have another set and I will probably sell them. I sold the other one I had, for a decent profit... The set you've got sounds like that particular set. Fresh grips, no marks - just perfection. Unless you plan to sell them though, take them to the range (sooner rather than later).

If you do not play them, are you then hoping you might make a profit on a future resale? Or are you going to treat them as a work of art and simply admire them? Personally, I do think either of these option would compare to the pleasure to be derived from playing these over and over again. You have spent the money, now reap the rewards. (One final comment. Goodness, I am jealous!)

They’re not going to be worth a fortune down the line. Taking them out and beating your friends with classic Daiwas ... priceless.

i probably wouldn’t pound them at the range (or for range work just put impact tape on the faces, which is useful on its own.) But they deserve to be on a course. Too much fun to pass up.

Yes I understand why it is a dilemma whether to play them or not. They are so rare and perfect that it seems sacrilege to put a mark on them. On the practical side as has been said they are probably not worth a heap unless perhaps to a niche collector so you are not losing a lot of $'s if you play them.

I have been in this situation before as a bit of a collector and have found a solution although it may be hard in this case.

I go and find another set of the same, doesn't matter how beat up they are so when I get a hankering to play a set like these I still can experience that without marking the pristine collector set.

I'm sure I'll regret this comment after the screams and wailing begins...

 

But, they're going feel very light. The shaft will make the difference on how well you hit them. The heads are like many heads from that time. I think you should admire them, hang them on a wall, don't hit them and sell them at some time in the future.

 

I've tried many Diawa irons during my decades in Japan and never found any that felt good. They're "clicky" and too light. There's a reason Diawa is out of the golf business. I never understood the fascination with their OnOff irons either. They were "clunky." So, I guess Diawa seemed clicky or clunky... haha.

Have you hit the OnOff heads? They don’t feel clunky or light. The Forged/Kuro series is really good. Don’t look any larger than a Bridgestone J15CB.

Of course I've hit OnOff. I said Diawa brand was light, not OnOff brand. But they sure felt clunky to me... :)

 

Golf clubs are like cars. Everyone has a preference for look and feel, even color.

I got a set of dg 8301 Monodyne with Daiwa lamate woods. Used, ok shape. But replaced the woods with brand new, in the plastic, Exceller all graphite hand made woods. Replaced the putter with a DGP 11 with a all graphite head. Can't even find a picture of that putter. Now I don't  want to use it.
