Yellow pro v1’s are harder than white. Convince me I’m wrong.

Got a few of the yellow prov1, prov1x, and avx. I am certain the cover is harder than white. Feels harder with my fingernail, coming off the club, and around greens.

My guess is nothing is going to change your perspective unless we could all view an actual compression test... that could be tough to do here.

Squeezing a ball in a gauge to determine "compression" doesn't tell you everything about how it "feels" (actually sounds) to someone. If there's a difference, the only place it would be different is the cover. You'd want to test cover hardness and cover flexibility.

I'd suspect any very slight difference would arise from either the clearcoat paint or the underlayer of paint between mantle and color. The actual formulation of urethane is exactly the same.

Thats a great idea and pretty darn thorough. Would be pretty cool to see a test like this conducted based on your theories OP

I have been thinking that the Yellow ball is harder too.

Glad that someone else feels the same way.

Would love to see testing on this.

Its really just the cover feels much harder. Has a more glossy look to it too.

In the skateboard world, dyes and coloring used in the urethane wheels can affect the ride quality just a little bit. That kind of milky white wheel color that you see on the likes of Bones Wheels and Spitfire Wheels is the natural urethane...adding dyes and coloring agents can either make the wheel softer and more crumbly, or harder and more brittle feeling. Does anyone know if the yellow is dyed into the urethane cover, or just painted on? Also, does anyone know if AEND Industries supplies the urethane to any golf ball manufacturers?

It is not paint. There is dye added to the cast thermoset urethane material which makes it a translucent yellow color. There is also dye added to the casing or mantle layer underneath. Finally the clearcoat of paint that's on the outside of all balls has to be slightly reformulated to let the yellow cover/casing color shine through.

But no yellow paint. Same layers of core(s), casing, cover, clearcoat as on the white versions. But with dye added.

I can’t say you are wrong, but Titleist would. I read an article from their head designer saying that they refused to release yellow for so many years because the dye makes the cover harder, and that they apparently spent millions of dollars and went through hundreds of dye formulations before funding one that had the exact same spin, softness, and durability as the white.

I guess the could be lying, but at least according to their engineers, it’s the same. Which means any difference is negligible to the consumer.

I’ll see if I can find a link to the article.

I know the Tour Velvet grips with white paintfill feel much softer and grippier to me than the regular all black ones.

Except they don't. I closed my eyes and let my wife hand me clubs with either the white ones or the black ones and damned if I could tell any difference. It's all in my head.

I suspect the yellow Pro V1 "hardness" is similar. Just hard to hit balls with your eyes closed to find out!

Your screen name is funny in this context. It's like you're saying, "I couldn't decide between the white and yellow Snell so I settled on **offwhite**"!

Sorry, I must have sat through one too many home redecorating discussions...

Natural urethane is yellow/green not white

  • 1 year later...

i blindfolded myself and had someone put a yellow prov1x and a white prov1x next to my putter before i took my stroke. this was indoors so the sound would be louder. after about 40 putts there was no discernible difference in sound. after about a dozen putts i knew i was just guessing with a 50/50 chance... i believe this is all in our heads. the mind will believe whatever it wants to believe
