Both courses are great. Use to play down there a lot when I worked at Colleton River which is another set of great courses. A third option is Belfair which has 36 holes as well. Was not really a fan of Moss Creek. Really can not go wrong with any of those. I have no idea the membership fees / up front costs.

My son and I played the North Course and have to say it was awesome. Wife is retiring in 31 days and BH is on our short list. It's not cheap, that's for certain, but the amenities are pretty great. Cant speak to how well they are doing financially. There is a LOT of competition down there. I was actually thinking about the National membership they offer, but its a bit of a trek from HHI.

Yeah unique place in the country with good year round weather. PM me any details you may have. Thanks.

Well....there is that. We are on the island and got walloped pretty good by Matthew. It is a concern, but in 24 years, that was our only incident. Doesn't mean we couldn't get hit three years straight, but the overall record is pretty good. No different than in Florida, the Gulf Coast etc. Other areas have drought, fire and floods.

But back on topic, as the other posters have said, I would also take a look at Belfair and Colleton River. Each has 36 holes of golf. I have played Belfair and it is a beautiful place. They all offer a LOT to do. The area has grown significantly over the 24 years we have had a place and traffic can become tiresome, but for most in a gated community, everything you need is within the community or VERY nearby.

If they are interested on being on the island itself, take a look at Long Cove. Highly rated golf and right in the heart of the island.

Off island, if they have $$$, take a look at Palmetto Bluff. I have yet to visit, but they send me info all the time. I hear the golf is outstanding, albeit only 18 holes. The good news is it sounds like the golf is always empty. Nice from the standpoint of getting on, but we are looking for an active community and this may not fit the bill. Again, I haven't visited but that is the impression I have via a few conversations.

Bump. Played up here in RI at a tourney at Potowamut yesterday. Walking back out to my car in the lot, I see someone with a Berkeley Hall front plate and SC tag in the back (yes, I went around back to see what state, as some around here only need one plate too). I'll be in the area in a few weeks, seeing this got me already anticipating vacation down there. Was nice to see.

The good news is HHI dodged a bullet with Dorian. A few trees down but no real flooding or wind damage. Whew!! You will be good to go when you get down there. We have friends coming down in a few weeks to take a look at Colleton River. I have visited there to watch a college tournament (and check out the courses). It looks nice. I like everything about the big three developments (CR, Belfair and Berkeley Hall). Each has great golf and a LOT of other amenities such as fitness centers etc. Let us know what you think when you get back.

All of the private gated communities here are very nice with great golf / practice facilities / amenities. Off Island, I would say the most popular ones we have are: Berkeley Hall, Belfair, Colleton River, Hampton Hall, Moss Creek, Oldfield, Callawassie, Spring Island, and Palmetto Bluff. On Island we have Long Cove and Wexford. The fees / POA's vary quite a bit depending on the neighborhood. I have lived in several of the Plantations here and have played every one of the golf courses and all of the courses I listed are very nice to excellent. I know the fees to pretty much all of them so if anyone has any questions, feel free to send me a message. On top of the golf/POA fees, most of the courses also have transfer fees (when you purchase a home in the neighborhood) and those can add up as well. But if you are an avid golfer looking for an excellent place to retire and enjoy the game year round, hard to beat Hilton Head / Bluffton area.
