Most important thing from 5 lessons

Recommended Posts

I have the book on audio, and it is 2.5 hrs long. I work alone and often listen to books. I have listened to 5 lessons literally 15 times. Why? every time i listen to it I pick something else up that I forgot about or a concept I couldnt grasp before.

a few notables is right foot square, left foot 1/4 turn open : dont swing above plane : start swing with hips : swing should feel pleasurable not forceful : grip

What I found that single and absolute most help was his section on stance. Squat down, dont bend over at the hips, weight on heels so you can lift up toes if you wanted. ok... so doesnt sound like much, and in fact it feels a bit off at first...

goto the range, bend at the knees only so you are completely balanced, bend neck to look at ball not spine. your arms will feel like they are not hanging straight down but slightly out because you are not bending your torso over. Lift the club just enough to get it to the top, wrist c0ck only 50% at top then power hips and your wrists will c0ck rest of the way automatically.

you will come out perfectly balanced and you will be swinging faster than your ott hack that you s*** yourself trying to hit a 300 yard drive.

Was rereading for a few minutes today before 18 with my wife. Was reading about how the pinkie covered the knuckle. Made a slight mod to my own grip and effectively moved my bottom hand closer to the right. Locking them closer together.

My driver gained 10 yards today and ball flight straightened a little. Gotta remember this next time out.

Grip. For me it was the grip. It turned my most troublesome area of my game, driving, back into the strength of my game. I've eliminated the left miss if I do my part and take the time to get the grip correct. I still find myself getting into a hurry and not getting the grip 100% correct as it is not ingrained yet.

Imo motion of the right arm/hand thru impact. Might have said pivot but it's not really explained how he did it

I think what interests me here is how connected his right elbow is to his hip/belt into impact, hips driving that arm through the ball almost like it's glued into his side.

5 lessons, modern fundamentals but not how I play golf by Ben Hogan. Hips are reactionary to intent, makes transition and startdown moves look like magic......and kind of is.

Only one way to automate this.

mu3wkswan2z5.jpeg

Step #1 - Educate the hands.

mu9nd9f5t5nv.jpeg

Step #2 - Move your hands.

Step #3 - Load the shaft and keep it loaded.

Step #4 - Return hands.

Lesson Complete.

I've read 5 Lessons a couple times, but never found it terribly useful. Big fan of Hogan's swing, but his teachings don't resonate with me.

This is an old and interesting discussion, but it's clear from modern teaching (and just watching Hogan... or any great ballstriker) that nobody leads with the hips. They may "think" or "feel" that this is what they do, but the swing starts from the ground up on the backswing, and the transition begins with a subtle shift of energy into the left foot. Where the weight goes depends largely on the player and shot shape. If you actually start with the hips without this shifting into the left foot and leg first you'll wipe the crud out of the ball.

I'll let Dan talk about it here...

That's the feeling Hogan had was that his right hip started his down swing , I agree with you by the way , I would say that the arms shoulders and then the right hip

in that order and of course within a millionth of a second of each other , the one thing we won't dispute is he had an amazing swing and athleticism for his generation

the man practically hit balls from sun up to sun down and in my book is the best ball striker to ever live and that includes Tiger , but again thats the feeling he had was

that he felt his right hip make the fist move but as I said we're talking tenths of a second in his magnificent swing .

Except if 99% of the people on earth grip the club like the drawing shows you will hit it dead right. If I ever need to hit a slice around a tree I think 5 lessons.

It's fascinating how, this many years later, folks are still talking Hogan. I think about the times he is coming from. Until the 50's, no tv, somewhat primitive movie cameras. He is writing based on what he sees in a mirror, or others or what he feels.

Today, everyone with a cell phone buys into some golf pro, some process, some swing change, with as much fervour as folks bought in to Hogan in his day.

I came from a time with black and white tv and no fm. I'm not an online gamer. I like the words and the pictures.

I like the fact that he gives a regular Joe/Jill a place to start.

Once I got to a place where I could regularly hit the ball, I had a few tools I could tinker with, to see how the ball changed direction. To me, that's his secret. Simplicity.

True...........If you use that grip, you must also use the right hand as Hogan attempted to explain. My pro was taught by Byron & Venturi, they were all about the right hand, another 30-40 yards with a driver. Amazing to watch a nearly used up old pro still spanking the ball. To use the right hand as directed, you must first use the right shoulder & arm correctly, of course you must also make a decent backswing and so on and so on. 5 Lessons is legit but not always good a good recommendation for those attempting to teach themselves.

He said there was a 'weight shift' first and there is a free ride. The left hip does not snap back auto, though it does seem like magic, Hogan glossed over the most dynamic move in golf. Don't try to turn your hips or shift plane but the hips should turn and the arms/shoulder should drop. This is the secret worth figuring out.
