Watch my swing evolve — and help me out!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just started to take the game a bit more seriously. Want to get some feedback on my swing as it’s coming along, but not as quickly as I would hope. Check out my videos in the link below and leave a comment if you see something you’d suggest changing/like. The videos are only about 30 seconds long so any help is greatly appreciated!!

Best,

It's quite hard to tell from down-the-line, but checking your grip is a first step. The clubface is open at the top and open at last parallel before impact. then, check your setup. Your right elbow might be above your left. You want a soft right elbow. Your shoulders will feel closed when you first do this, but that's just a "feel." You may (or may not) have open shoulders because of the right elbow position. The next step is to make sure you're not opening the face with your takeaway. Ideally, you'd like the face to match your spine angle. You'll have a slightly flatter left wrist at the top.

Then, I'd let your hips turn much more at takeaway. At the top, you're very vertical. Your hands really could get a little "deeper" so you have more room to swing from the inside. Notice I didn't say "lower," just deeper. Earlier hip turn will automatically correct this problem.

If you've addressed all these issues, the ball should start a little right go left more. If you're hitting a pull-hook, then you have a path issue that needs to be addressed. But looking into the above might fix all this stuff.

Scottbox,

Thanks for that information. I have been working on getting my hips to turn more during my takeaway which i feel is helping get my hands deeper. What would you suggest for grip changes to help keep my club face square at impact and at the top of my takeaway? I generally don't hit too many pull-hooks. Consistency is something I'm working on through hitting tons of balls at the range. just want to make sure I'm practicing good habits rather than something that will require a change down the road. Are there any drills you would suggest to help get the "feel" of this deeper takeaway or something that might help me keep my club face in the correct position?

Thanks,

Lane,

Thanks for that information. I definitely agree that my habits are natural and learned (played baseball growing up so I'm used to staying loaded on my back leg), but I am willing to put in the work to make the changes. Would you suggest continuing to get my swing on video and work on 1-2 small changes at a time? It sounds like I have a long road ahead of me, which is exciting, but I don't want to take on too many changes at once. Any suggestions on where I start?

Thanks Lane,

@TourSauceWA - Sign up for Monte's Snohomish Valley Clinic for 8/17-8/18 - 2 Spots Left

He brings the BodiTrak, which should help you understand the weight transition quite a bit more. The amount of golf knowledge available to you over 2 days will be extremely helpful as you try to improve your golf game.

Lane,

I agree that my natural motion is to try to hit the ball rather than sweep it off the ground. Just watched some video of Tiger and I see what you're talking about with the 90 degree and holding this angle till shaft is at parallel with the ground. I will try to post a front on slow motion video that you can take a look at and see if I'm working on the right things.

Thanks again,

Some thoughts- you begin your takeaway great, but then take the club very much inside the further into your backswing you get. Do you feel like you're stuck (left arm pinned to chest and hands behind your back) at some point on your downswing? That seems to be the cause of that hand roll action you do at impact.

Consider taking the hands more up and in during the backswing, give it a little pause at the top and let gravity shallow the club out.

This is a good video that succinctly describes a bit of what you're struggling with. In my opinion, you should worry about issues in swing chronological order, meaning backswing -> transition -> downswing -> follow through. This seems to be the fix for your backswing. Give it a shot then maybe post another video in a week and see if you're having issues with transition assuming you've done the right backswing work.

Hi All,

Been working on the swing based on comments that were given. Thank you all for tuning in and giving me some feedback. I have been able to have more consistent ball striking and greater control of the shot shape during rounds, especially with my iron shots. I'll post a few videos here for everyone to check out. If you are interested in providing more feedback feel free! If not, please take a look at my swing if you want to see a carbon copy of Tiger Woods ;) Jokes, but thanks for all the help and responses!

Something I noticed...the slo mo face view from 8/11 shows a sway of the lower body more than a turn. Watch your right knee on backswing, it slides back from its starting position taking your weight with it...swaying instead of turning. Try standing on the edge of a short 2x4 board (or two golf balls) under the outside of your right foot so it forces you to your instep and hit a few practice balls. Your right knee will be leaned in toward your left knee at address and you won't be able to sway to the outside of your right foot during the backswing.
