How should I plan a Wild Horse/Dismal River/Prairie Club trip?

Coming from Denver our plan is Ballyneal for 2 days (thank you for your prayers), then WH, DR and PC over say a week. A lot of driving but great courses. Has anyone done this and where would it be best to stay? Day 1 would be the drive from BN. I dont mind cheap America's Best/Motel 6 type but sometimes there are good packages? I guess the obvious would be play WH, stay local, then on to DR, same again, and on to PC at Valentine. What are the dont miss course eg DR Red or White, PC Dunes/Pines. Thoughts?

DR, two courses about split on which people seem to like better.

PC, pretty strong majority like the Dunes better.

Stay in the cabins at PC, they’re really nice. Stay in the cabins at DR, they’re the only place to stay.

At Wildhorse they have some chain hotels right out on the interstate. Or stay in North Platte (30 miles) for a larger selection.

All the courses are pretty much “don’t miss”. You don’t want to go PC & DR and not play both. Don’t forget the Horse course at PC either.

OK so

Day1: from Ballyneal, drive to WH and play 18h that afternoon, stay in either GB or NP,

Day 2: drive to DR and play DR Red 18h, stay at DR

Day 3: play DR White 18h then drive to PC, stay at PC,

Day 4: play PC both courses, stay at PC,

Day 5: Drive back to Denver

Is that doable? Looks like the middle driving legs would be about 3 hours each?

It’s been a while so I’m not sure on the pay structure anymore at DR, bit I think it’s basically a daily fee, and then just keep playing. If that is still the case, after playing WildHorsr I would definitely stay in North Platte (save the 30 miles) and head up to DR early. If I remember, it’s only about 60 miles. You could easily get in both courses on day 2. You have have quite a bit of down time built in from Holyoke to Gothenburg to Dismal since those aren’t bad drives. And in those areas there really isn’t a lot to do other than golf, I think you’ve got some opportunities for extra play (if you’re a 36 hole a day group).

Last I knew PC only had one course open to the public per day. The other course was only for member play. They then flip flop the members course. So to get both courses at PC you would need to stay overnight.

I love playing 36 or more a day but have several friends who don’t. They had no problems playing 36 at Dismal. I would recommend playing the Nicklaus course first. It’s more challenging than the Doak.

If this trip has not occurred than on your way back to Denver I would highly suggest Bayside in Burle, NE. The course is a great test and built along lake mcconaughy

Trip happening in August / September 2019. Playing Bear Dance/Fossil Trace/Arrowhead/ Commonground in Denver then driving out to Ballyneal, Wild Horse, Dismal River and Prairie Club. A lot of driving but with 4 in the group should be OK. I like the play all day options although 36 holes can be tough on the old body. May have to use a cart here and there. Coming from Aussie it will be a Wild West experience. Might have to buy a Stetson!

Ballyneal is walking only, thus to play back to back days of 36 and walking will certainly not be easy.

It is a lot of driving but the time goes quickly out on the open road talking with friends.

I do not know if any of your dates are set in stone yet but based on your current list of courses within Nebraska the order I would play the courses chronologically is Wild Horse, Dismal River, Prairie Club, Bayside.

The variety of golf on your trip will be dramatic and a great experience, just remember the ball will fly A LOT further in Denver than in Nebraska

I am looking forward to that!! And that order seems to be right for the courses - cuts down the daily drive. With 4 in the group any suggestions on the best accommodation option at The Prairie Club? I think they have a 4BR cabin which sounds cool.

Get a cabin, they are extremely nice.

Prairie club has 2 courses but 1 is open for public play while the other is reserved for members, so I am not sure if you can both in 1 days.

Dismal was similar under prior ownership so you may want to check with the course to see if you have the option to play both in the same day.

Looks like we might have to play 36h at Dismal River or Prairie Club in one day so the question is which of the courses are more walkable and which are best in a cart? We like to walk generally speaking but to do 36 we will want a cart.

A little late here, just saw this. But, these are big places. Lots of scrub between holes, dirt cart paths. I would take a cart both places. Especially doing 36. I can’t remeber exactly, but I think the first tee of the White (Nicklaus) course is a mile from the clubhouse/range.

Ballyneal requires a 1 night stay in their lodges for outside play. 250 bucks for all day. It is possible to stay more than 1 day BTW as they say this is a one time only courtesy and encourage a longer stay.

How accessible is this option? Do you have to know someone or what? Really interested in doing a similar trip next year.

It's pretty straightforward as you can write to the club via emaial from their website and play one time in your lifetime. They have to approve of course but seems pretty openif you give them dates.

Chiming in late here.. BUT... I am scheduling a trip the last two weeks in June with a similar itinerary.

I am flying into Omaha, then heading west.

Oak Quarry in Ashland, then drive to Gothenburg and spend the night on the property at Wild Horse

Play Wild Horse, then head to spend two days at Dismal River and stay on property (I spoke with them today and they confirmed I could play there...)

Then head to the Prairie Club (spend two days there) since you can only play one course each day. And also I will play their Horse course

Drive east to Tatanka to play there... and spend the night, then head to Omaha

In Omaha I will play Platteview Country Club as a guest of one of the members.

At 71 years old, I plan to use a golf cart at every location for every round. I am the only person on this trip so I also need to handle the driving.

I will post a trip report.

Awesome. You will love it. You’re going to log some miles. And wait til you make that drive through the Sandhills, if you’ve never been in an area like that it’s mind blowing. So much of nothing out there!

Very nice!!! Let us know how it goes. Been curious about Tatanka...

Also...while in Omaha if you have time for an additional course...Indian Creek Golf Club is reasonably price (~$60 round with cart) and is where they play the Nationwide Tour event. I've never played Platteview, but I understand that it has a lot of blind shots...so the member will need to give you pointers on where to aim.

The nothingness is great....just you, the ball and nature...
