Member Guest (format inquiry)

Recommended Posts

Its that time of year gents where member guest is likely upon your club, I'm playing in one next Wed-Thurs with a colleague but wanted to see what your clubs do in regard to Handicap and Format

this one I am playing in has this weird rule about a max of 10 handicaps between partners (which is going to shave my partner of 4-5 strokes of what he should have (and he needs them)

It's kind of annoying cause we get smoked every year but still a member guest so a lot of fun!

What I don't get is if we both have legit handicaps and we do why not just honour them? Can anyone think of a logical reason for this ?

HANDICAPS

All players must have a valid RCGA or USGA Handicap. There must be at least 5 scores from 2019 entered to avoid potential handicap adjustment from the committee. The maximum handicap differential between partners is 10 strokes. **Teams with more than a 10 stroke difference will be adjusted to 10**, using the lower of the two handicaps and adjusting down the higher handicap. The Member Guest Committee has the right to review and adjust all handicaps.

Playing with my dad in one in a couple weeks up at the Quechee Club in VT.

2 man teams, they put us into flights of 5 teams, 9 hole matches across 2 courses and 3 days playing every other team in your flight at least once, then playoffs based on your results after the 4 matches.

Something fun they do is on the first morning they have a "par 3 contest" where they set up a tee box in the fairway on one of the 9's and it's a good way to warm up and see how the course is playing before the actual matches start.

My guess would be that they're trying to keep people from bringing the most severe sandbaggers by implementing the minimum cap. It's not going to prevent all the sandbaggers, but you'll at least keep out the extreme ones like the 20 who plays like a 10.

My club does a couple a year. The one-day ones are 80% member cap, 70% guest cap, better ball net. Our big 3-day one is 100% member cap, 80% guest cap, better ball net medal play for the first two days, better ball net match play for the third day. Seems to work fairly well, as we've rarely had a repeat winner.

I don't think that protects from sandbaggers, just need a sandbagger within 10 of your cap ..

Misread that, thought they were capping it at 10.

Just played in our member guest over 36holes

We had 8 flights of between 4 and 5 teams based on handicaps. Max difference was 10shots between them.

We were seeded 2nd and in the top flight as my guest plays off +1 and I was the worst in the flight of 6.3

All flights played gross and we did

9 holes scramble then 9 holes play your own ball

Next day 9 hole shamble then 9 hole greensomes

We finished at 137, 7 under par for 36 and won our flight

All flight winners then went to a shootout based off 80% off lowest and 20% off highest in a scramble format

Basically all teams got shots on the first 3 holes and 2 teams eliminated per hole

We birdied the first and second with less than 6 foot putts on each, both my approaches lol

About 60 people watching the shootout all liquored up and having great fun

Knocked my approach on the 3rd to 8 feet, however all 4 teams were on in 2. Meaning we had to hole it

Well I missed the putt and we were out. Great fun over 2 days, just wanted to get the the par 3 fourth as the last 2 teams missed the green with all approach shots. No way we missed the green

Team in flight 3 that had 6.7 and 7.7 won the shootout.

We really had to birdie everything but great 2 days, with great prizes and titleist gift cards at cost. Great dinner lunches and looking forward to next year

We play 16 flights of 8 teams on two courses, over three days. 7 matches, holes each, of better ball match play format, each hole is a point. Teams are flighted based on total GHIN index for the team. We do use the 10 stroke rule within a team - to prevent playing matches against a team who has a player who is basically getting a stroke a hole on the other team. We also have a horse race within each flight at the end of day one. Flight winners go into a four hole playoff of four teams, and the winners of that play a three hole shootout for the championship. We use 100% handicaps.

A great event ~ but we still have sandbaggers. We are trying our very best to figure that out...
