What Driver Swingweight do you play?

MooJersey

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to see what SW you all play. I’ve been playing a lot with my setup lately. I took the weights out of my Cobra F8+ and love the feel. It is playing at “C1” according to an online calculator.

I removed the weights from my fairway and hybrid too. Feel so much better...

EDIT: Adding the calculator I used

D6 with a 44.5 inch driver. Once I got it cut, I used lead tape until it felt right. I had a snaphooking issue with my previous driver and have a tendency to get the clubhead out in front so the heavier weight helps a lot.

I never added any weight after shortening the driver. Hitting the driver very well. Still C4 seems a bit light compared to the other swing weights here so far.

Since non of you have specified what grip model and weight, this SW values tells nothing, they cant be compared and are not compatible numbers. My arsenal of drivers vary from D8 to E3 without grips, but all of them measure below D0 with grips, but i only play grips above 60 grams (up to 123 grams).

D2-D3 but for me it's much more about head weight and overall static club weight. Generally I like to play ~200g heads with 60-65g shafts. Whether the SW is a little under or over the D2/3 range is just a consequence of the build. I've actually had success playing 44.5'' but I'll generally move up to ~70g shaft at that point.

Its not really possible "online", and il try to explain why.

I took my box of grips i had lying here, the grip i use as "standard" is GP Tour velvet.

Official weight is 49.5 grams as 60R, but there is a "tolerance" of plus minus 3.5 grams, so the random grip i picked up was 52.0. with a BP of 10.4 mm from the butt.

MCC+4 as "standard size" is officially 52 grams, but the random grip i picked from the box was 49 grams and a BP of 10.1

On the paper this 2 grips with its "official specs" should return the same SW value, but they never do because of this tolerances, so IMO we should NOT judge SW values with grips at all, but note it down for reference.

I consider E1 without grips to be "standard" or equal to D2 with grips if you like, all actual changes to that makes a difference for flex (head weight and shaft BP), while no matter grip we add, DONT make any difference for flex, so i have chosen to look at them as "True SW" and "Play SW", where true values make a difference for flex up or down, while play SW only makes a difference for TOTAL weight.

The online calks hardly ever takes BP (of each component) into consideration, but grips is plus minus 4 inch, so your return values is not that far off and seems to be about right, but it is to the lower side of "true numbers". We must measure the clubs BP on the millimeter to get good return values.

its way worse in my bag where most grips is 72 grams, one of them up at 123 grams (a driver), and then we really get "sick numbers" we cant use for anything at all, they dont tell the true story.

My XR.16 Pro swings at D2, about one point under stock. Only problem I have is when a non-wedge club is really lighter or really heavier then the other clubs.

Just started playing m3 440 at 44.5” and it was around D0. I was hitting it well but the head felt light compared to what I was use to. I added a 5g weight to get it closer to d3-d4. The weight feels more normal, but now I can only cut the ball when I usually like to play a slight draw so considering taking the 5g weight off.

Does adding weight to the head typically cause the ball to go right more?

A lighter club can, for many people, make it easier to square the face up. Or at least that's been Ping's theory for a long time, it's why they favor lighter swingweights than other major brands.

So the opposite would be a heavier club making it harder to get the clubface square.

In my opinion (and I'm a hacker just repeating what I've been told by my teaching pro) a lot of people's swing mechanics produce a slightly open clubface during the downswing. Lighter clubs or lighter swingweights can enable those people to kind of "catch up" at the last moment and flip the slightly to get it square. But that's hard to do with a heavy club.

Who knows if that applies to you. Some people it might be just the opposite, it's a feel thing really. But it does seem to apply to me right now (although I'm working on some swing drills to eliminate my own open clubface tendency).
