Boone-Banner Elk area golf suggestions

My wife and I will be in this area next month and I'm looking for info on courses in the area. We are planning one NC round and one TN round (gives me another state to check off my list). We have no connections so we cannot play any of the great-looking private courses in the area.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Boone GC is a good public option but also very busy. 2 of the private’s have onsite accommodations that give you access to their golf and dining. Hound Ears Club and Linville GC. (Eesola Lodge). My profile pic is from the 6th tee at Hound Ears looking directly at Grandfather Mtn.

We already have our lodging set as we are staying in a cozy cabin about 5 minutes from Hound Ears...however that 5 minutes might seem a world away. The course and the surroundings look beautiful!

Based on what I've read I think we are leaning toward Linville Land Harbor. I'd hate to go to the mountains and play a flatter course like Boone and Land Harbor has views and elevation changes with decent rates.

No decisions have been made yet though. Still searching for info and I thank everyone who has contributed.

There are a ton of hidden ultra private courses in Banner Elk. As far as public, Boone Golf Club is nice, they do have hot deals through golf now and can get on fairly cheap, but it does tend to be very crowded. As others have said Mtn Glenn is another awesome public course. There is a fun little par 3 that you can play on 105 which is near where you will be staying.

I somehow missed the profile pic when I first replied! I grew up every summer on the house right above where you took that picture (on the Par 3 5th). Both of my hole in ones are at Hound Ears (7 and 15), amazing memories!

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for all the help and info. We played Mountain Glen this afternoon in perfect 78 degree weather with a light breeze. Course was quite busy, we were paired with another couple and while it was a 4 1/2 hour round the pace seemed okay. Very fair for women with no forcied carries and not much danger lurking. The course is in pretty nice shape but some fairways were a bit spotty and not closely mown. Perhaps keeping the grass longer as growing season is slowing down? Greens rolled well, bunkers were not raked and could use some attention from the staff. Their website featured a $10/person discount but we had no printer available. Mentioned this when I made the tee time and they noted it and gave us the $40 rate at checkin. Adequate facilities, nothing fancy. Ample parking, clean carts and all in all I would reccomend playing.

I played Boone Golf club last week and the course was in amazing shape. Played with a twosome and finished in about 3 hours. We were told when we teed off that we would not be able to tee off on 10 until 10am (8am tee time). Thankfully when we made the turn there was a gap and we did not hit the group in front of us until number 15. Would highly recommend!

Not course-related but I'd like to put in a plug for a golf store on 105S in Boone called Peanuts and Golf. Great family vibe with wonderful customer service. They have a huge inventory of new/used clubs and other golf realted items (balls, tees, etc.). An interesting and unique item is their sock style knitted headcover which comes in a large number of color combos. Racks of womens clothing are featured. Fun place to browse and nice people to deal with.
