Does choosing the right golf balls matters?

Once you’ve played enough to form an opinion of what you are looking for in a ball, sure it does! But if you are still struggling to make clean contact most of the time, especially on chips and pitches, probably not so much.

 

A good quality ball will never hurt though, but might not be worth the price if you loose many. That of course depends on how much you are comfortable spending on golf balls though.

i used to think no way it matters. but like stated above once i got better and was able to make clean contact 100yards and in i can now notice big differences. and my tee balls are more accurate as well allowing me to use a better more expensive ball since i dont loose nearly as many as i used to when I first started golfing.

yes, play a urethane ball and you will see the difference it makes getting the ball closer to the pin with "greenside spin". It takes a season to appreciate it. But, there's no turning back.

I think the perfect ball is between the ProV1, TP5, and BXs. I just won't pay for ProV1s because they're not worth it. TP5s are cheaper and I have a stack from a sale still. BXs I just don't buy much but, they are amazing.

If they still made Nike RZN Tour Plat and Black, those would be the only ball I played, hands down. They were and are the best ball made to date.

For most New England courses the higher flight and steeper angle of descent of the non-urethanes will hold as well as the spinnier urethanes while giving a straighter, longer flight.

I agree with the first bit. For example, as I started playing more, I realized I don't like ProV1 or ProV1x because I tend to spin them too much. So I found Bridgestone B330 balls spin less for me. They stop on the greens as opposed to a ProV1x that might spin off the green.

However, I DO think an 20 or 25 hdcp'r playing a ProV1 (as another example) might get too much side spin on a mis-hit and exacerbate the miss. Therefore, a high quality ball like that might not be best for that player at that time. There are balls optimized for swing speed and spinning ability. My suggestion would be to go to a bunch of different ball manufacturer websites and do their "ball fitting" surveys. That'll at least give you an idea of what's best for YOU.

Yes, 100%. Below a certain skill level it probably matters only somewhat, but once you become half way decent and beyond, it matters a lot.

 

It matters so much that I'd almost say a driver fitting would consist of fitting your driver to the ball you are already using, based on being fit into said ball starting at your putter, wedges and irons.
