Interesting that they did an end around and instead of having a school paying players decide to allow them to sign endorsement deals. Seeing that it doesn't take affect until 2023, feels like it's designed to spur other action.

This could have a MASSIVE shift on the national landscape of college athletics where the majority of great teams right now are in smaller markets..... Next few years of lawsuits and negotiating will be interesting.

It is clearly about time that something was done about this issue in college sports. There are good arguments on both sides of the issue, so I do like how the California legislators approached it - with the endorsements and such rather than direct payment. I think there is still an argument to be made concerning the worth of a free (or subsidized) college education. Direct payments to players would obviously completely upset the current culture and system - which would be a tragedy. So, I'm not sure directly paying players is the way to go. Or if it is, sports should be divorced from the colleges, and just serve as development academies or a minor league system.

Having been both a student and an employee of a big time football institution, I know that football is generating obscene amounts of money for a lot of various actors. So much so, and given the regulations, schools are having to make up ways to spend all of it - like new weight rooms and locker rooms every two years. My school replaced the stadium jumbotron like three times in four years.

Some of that money is going to support other sports, of course, which is good. But then again, there are a ton of college athletes (baseball, golf) who are only getting partial scholarships. At the end of the day, I see a lot of money being wasted, and a lot of people getting the short end of the stick. Something should change.

It will be the end of the super highend fancy football locker room. I agree with the school not paying players directly. What people seem to miss in this to is it will help a lot of lower level players as well. The NCAA is very limiting on how players can give lessons or work at camps and get money based on their skill and statue. It will allow a lot more players to go make money by giving private lessons and camps.

While I support the idea, let's be completely honest CA lawmakers that this is all about the additional taxes and business fee revenue they'll be able to grab and not really about the college athlete's best interests. If it was then it would be all about the schools paying the players directly for their image and likeness usage.

Who is going to endorse or go to the camp of a lower level player? Nobody. This, in no way, will help any lower tier school’s player. The money, as in the pros, is going to the elite player who will, more than likely, be at a blue blood school. In looking at football, there is already a pretty wide gap between the Power 5 and the other conferences. And, within the Power 5, there is a pretty wide talent gap between the 5-6 elite teams and the rest. Parity in FBS football is already pretty bad and in all likelihood this will further increase it.

Yes, this ^^^^^^. College programs in California have been largely middle-of-the-road in the two major moneymaking sports (football and basketball) the past several years. Sure, there were a few good Stanford football teams with Luck/McCaffery, a year that USC football found its way into the top 10, and a good UCLA basketball a few years back.....but aside from that, it has been quite humdrum. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is little more than a ploy to lure top talent away from the elite programs to put California schools back on the map.

I am prob the stick in the mud that doesnt agree with this at all...but am very interested in how this will affect California in the NCAA and if it will pave the way for other states or conferences to do the same.

On a side note, I may be able to get on board if this means EA can bring back NCAA football and basketball.
