Played with a guy Sunday who was yapping all night on Saturday how good he was. Saying he was a single digit handicap, but now plays to 10.

 

I am not good, my goal is to shoot 90, I’m usually within a few strokes either way, which I told him.

 

We had an opening so we invited him.

 

He wanted to give us strokes, I said let’s evaluate at the turn, we were just playing for drinks.

 

Front 9 I shot a low for me 43, he shot a 51 and was beside himself.

 

I jokingly asked him how many strokes he wanted on the back.....I thought my good buddy/regular partner was going he was to lose it when he heard that.

That must have motivated him, he shot a 41 on the back to my 44.

 

Still beat him by 5.

 

One of the most satisfying beers I’ve ever had after a round of golf.....

However, I feel like there's never any stories about supposed low handicaps who go out and play well. I feel like we need to start telling some of those so every low index doesn't immediately get questioned in real life

 

So here goes, a few weeks ago i went out with some work colleagues to play a round of golf. Didn't engage in much banter before the round. One of the guys joked that i'd probably shoot a 72 so he didn't want to bet as he doesn't play much. I shot a 73. the End

I got paired up with a guy who said 'I'm a +1.3 and play some mini tours, wanna play tips? I'll be bored from the whites.' I said Ok, and connected for a 240 carry 260 total drive on our opening 510yd par 5. His ball flew mine by 30 yards and he had 185 in, where he hit 7 iron to 10 feet, lipped the eagle and tapped in birdie. He then birdied another before catching an impossible plugged bunker lie that led to a double. Finished the 9 at even par and left. If he coulda bought a putt and had missed that bunker he was going to be -4/-5 easy. It was a display for sure.

 

The "Who has played with a legit scratch" thread does a pretty good job relating these stories I think

I think it was Chad Campell who said "If a golfer has to tell you how good he is, then he isn't that good."

Not that I'm anything special, but I hate even telling people my handicap if I'm playing with strangers. As a working dad with limited play/practice time, I never really know when a true stinker of a round is going to show up. Nothing worse than letting them know your a 5 and then throwing up a nice mid-80's clunker ...

Yep. Anyone can talk and tell _funny_ stories.
