Stripped Black Finish on SM7’s

Decided to strip two of my wedges of the black finish because it was pretty worn.

 

Soaked both my 60 and 50 degree wedges in vinegar for about an hour then used some softer sand paper to strip the finish. Not as “raw” looking as others I’ve seen but kinda a mid point between raw and black.

That looks great!!! good alternative to paying 200 for a raw head lol. I have the polished finish but always kick myself for not getting the black so I can strip it.

Thank you! Definitely a cheaper alternative. i'd recommend vinegar rather than going the chemical route. Some of the CLR or alcohol strips ive seen make it look almost too raw

What grit sandpaper did you use? Also what kind of vinegar?

I used apple cider vinegar and not sure what grit sandpaper but it wasn't very coarse. It came from a sheet rock repair kit.

I don’t think they will rust, maybe a little rust will form only at the bottom where the sole hits the ground.

 

The little finish that’s left on there does a pretty good job of keeping the rust off, but they look beautiful as as is.

I used White Vinegar on mine. No sandpaper. Love the look.

I stripped some SM7 Jet Black wedges for a friend this past week. They were brand new out of the box so I had to make sure they were free of any oils by wiping down with alcohol. Soaked them for about 3 hours in White Vinegar, rinsed, and then used a Green Scotchbrite Pad. After one final wipe down with alcohol, shined up the ferrules.

Ive always used Naval Jelly to strip wedges. No need to wait for hours like vinegar. Just coat the head, let it sit for a minute, then use a scotchbrite pad or I use foam backed automotive wet sanding sponges (800-1000 grit), rinse with warm water while scrubbing, repeat the process a couple times. Works great and leaves an identical finish as the above post. Stripped my last set of 3 SM7's in about 10 minutes.

gorgeous. I might have to try this! Do they still cut out glare from the sun or are they reflective? thats the main reason i go with the black wedges

They cut glare just as well as a raw wedge. The main benefit to the raw wedges is the anti-glare characteristic and lack of wear marks. They're still there, just muted as compared to the wear on a Jet Black or Chrome. Just not as noticeable.
