Pinehurst Pine Needles club selection for conditions

How firm are the fairways? How does the sand play? I’m coming from San Diego and not sure what to expect. Any help would be great! I’m playing at Pinehurst and pine needles and some courses in Chapel Hill area. I was wondering if i should bring some high bounce or low bounce wedges and if hybrids or lower flighted long irons might be the play. If I’m over thinking it, it’s what we do here on WRX haha but any help is appreciated. Also course condition updates would be great!

You **are** overthinking. However, to answer the questions, the fairways generally play pretty firm. However if you're going in the next couple of weeks, you may be playing on freshly overseeded fairways at Pine Needles. When the overseed is coming in, they tend to water a bit more so it could be softer. At Pinehurst they don't overseed, they paint the fairways, so it will play pretty firm. The sand plays pretty firm too, but not so hard I ever think about using a low-bounce wedge. Something you may want to consider is practicing with your putter from off the green. When the ground is firm, and the grass cut really tight, putting can be a much better option than chipping.

I don't think they overseed the "ultra-dwarf" Bermuda greens anywhere in the area. As the grass goes dormant in cooler weather, the blades lie down a bit and they get even faster. At least that's my experience when I go for Thanksgiving.

Went back in April to Pinehurst Brewery. Told it was a 3 hour wait! Wound up eating in the Village instead.

There are lots of good places to eat, and the Carolina is one of them. So is the dining room at the Holly Inn, in a much more intimate room. At one time the Carolina Dining Room required a sports coat, not sure if that dress code is still in effect. Food at the Pinecrest Inn was good last time I was there, but its been quite a few years. In season, the good places are crowded. The best meal in town might be just outside of the Village, at Eliot's on Linden. A lot depends on what you want, more casual or more fine dining.

Would you recommend it or suggest something else? How were the greens and fairways?

Bunkers hard?

That week we ate at the pinehurst brewery (good food, service was ok), ryder cup lounge, the deuce, and the carolina. We would go back to the carolina for dinner for sure. We stayed there, so we had breakfast there each day, and that is really good.

Fairways and Greens were in great shape. #4 greens were faster than #2, but I played it later in the day. Both slower than my home course, but in great shape. Bunkers are good, since they are all treated as waste areas, you can figure out how much sand you have under the ball.

Would you recommend a caddie there on 4 or 2? Anything tricky with the greens?

I had a caddie on both as I wanted the full experience and since both are cart path only, i didn't want to carry my bag :) . It was hot enough that one of our group went in due to heat. I enjoyed having the caddies as i was playing as a single, so I had someone to talk to if the group was not talkative. On #4 everyone was walking and caddie interacted with everyone and it was a great time. On #2, played with a couple and member who were both in carts, so I spent the time walking down the fairways talking to my caddie. Both made the trip more memorable. #4 the lines were more important and i was putting well, so caddie just left me to it, unless i asked. On #2, it seemed like the grain would cause more issue than the break, so having the caddie helped there, line off tee was important too as fairways were firm and didn't want to run into the crap (only relevant on back 9, as i played like crap on the front 9).
