The Generations Bag

Dan Drake

Recommended Posts

So, like most everyone on here, I'm a true WRX'er. I swap out this, bend that, re-shaft these, and I tweak those. I have been fortunate enough to get on a staff deal with Callaway and I'm playing the absolute best golf of my life with their sticks. That said, I've dynamically lie angle tested and bent them, DIY MOI'd them, re-gripped them with a MCC +4 Align with the reminder WAAAYYYY off to the side, and I put my own "old reliable" shaft in the driver. My gamers aren't even close to "off the rack." But, other than a few very small and expensive things left that I could do to them, they're done.

So, I needed a new project. And this part of the forum was the inspiration for my new bag: The Generations Bag

I'm going to put together a bag that includes clubs that my grandfather, my father, and I all played at some length throughout our golfing lives. Slowly, but surely, I'm going to put this bag together, and then wrap it in a beautiful leather Sunday walking bag (that part will be last, as that is way more money than I have laying around right now!). I'm going to stamp our initials on the clubs that are from our respective sets, re-shaft the clubs that need it, probably strip the chrome from some/all of the clubs, maybe do a bit of re-grooving, and make them all beautiful again. And you bet your sweet bippy there's going to be some BB&F ferrules and Best Grips classic wraps going on all of them! Then, I'm going to fill that bag with a water bottle, a few balls, a basic GPS, a blue-tooth speaker, a bottle of divot mix, and a battery to make sure the good tunes and GPS have juice.

And while I'm doing all of that, and for a long time afterwards, I'm going to play them. I'm going to play them on the muni that I grew up playing with my father and grandfather. I'm going to play them at the very nice course that I'm now the proud General Manager at. And I'm going to play them at the course close to home when I play a round with my son. I'm going to play them every time I just want to enjoy a round of golf. Sure, my gamers will be there in the trunk of the car at all times, waiting for practice time and tournament "season," but these will be my fun time sticks. I will have this set with me for about the next 20 years, I would guess.

And then, I'm going to give the Generations Bag to my son. And I hope he'll put one of his clubs in and keep the bag until his son is ready for it. I can't think of any more beautiful way to share this great game with my children and grandchildren while simultaneously keeping alive the memory of my father and grandfather.

Here's the current lineup:

Driver - Macgregor M85 TW - Sadly, this wasn't one of "ours." None of my father or grandfather's old wooden drivers were salvageable, so I searched until this beauty came available. I couldn't be happier

4w - Palmer "The Standard" blonde - This was my grandfather's. The shaft band is gone and it feels pretty soft when swinging it, but that may be a good thing, as this club needs to be versatile, and slightly softer shafts are certainly easier for me to be "creative" with

5/7/W - I want this to be a walking and fun set, so I'm going with 7 total clubs. So, to fill the spot of my father's clubs, I'm on the hunt for a set of mid 70's (I believe) PGA brand "The Custom" irons. It looks like these came about just after the brand changed from Burke to PGA. These were the first "real" set of clubs my dad bought for himself when he started playing regularly as an adult, and while his original set isn't around anymore, we both remember some of the great shots he hit with these. In fact, he would go on to keep the 9i in his bag well into the 90's as sort of his chipper/utility wedge around the green. Some of the little scuttlers that he used to hit through! bermuda rough and get them to stop near the hole had me thinking that 9i was magical. (BTW, if anyone knows where a set of these are, please PM me)

Cleveland "Tour Action" 485 56° - My first "real" club. Everything up to this point had been a hand-me-down, knock-off, or Wal-Mart set. But this wedge was my first "real" golf club and I loved it. And I learned how to use it as well. This was back in '94 and the 60° wedges hadn't taken over just yet. They would in a few years, but the job of hitting high lofted wedge shots was still the domain of the 56° back then. And I knew how to use that sucker. Heck, the Cleveland script on the sole is so worn from bunker practice that it now has the Eye 2 sole grind. I accidentally found out what the past generation meant when they said they had to break in a wedge. Well, this bad boy is broken in just right.

Putter - Currently, this is a Yes Sophia. I wanted something with a classic shape and this 8802 style blade fit the bill perfectly. Perhaps this is the spot my son can choose to replace. I'm certainly not married to it, and if it comes down to replacing this putter vs. the Macgregor driver, well, you all know which one has to go first.

So there it is, the Generations Bag. You folks on this side of WRX have had it right all along. I have more excitement right now thinking about this bag than any piece of new equipment could ever stir.

And I can't wait to put it all in play during a round in the near future with my father and my son.

Lovely idea, Dan. :)

Like pahogan, my immediate ancestors didn't play golf. I actually came into the game due to my #2 son, after he'd developed an interest. Absurd back problems are nearly certain to keep him from playing any longer, so I'll be looking to my granddaughter, or any future grandchildren, to possibly start my own tradition.

Stu,

RPJ is the first WRX'er that I was fortunate enough to start a relationship with IRL, as the kids say. And while we've only ever spoken on the phone or via text, I consider myself lucky to call him my friend. RPJ was there for me some 5+ years ago when I needed a little outside perspective on my career path and choices and I was humbled that he gave me his time and help so freely and kindly. I put that salutation at the end of my post to pay some small token of respect to RPJ. Much like a guitar player will slightly alter someone else's solo that they are playing to show deference, I put that at the end of my "story" because I don't think anyone else on WRX tells stories quite like @Forged4ever. Thank you RPJ.

I "met" him on another golf forum that shall remain nameless years ago. I remember I had so much respect for him I called him Mr Jacobs. He told me do not call him that it was either Richard or RP. Yep as you have I have conversed with him via PM or on the phone. One of his goals he told me was when his health improved he wanted to play golf with me. We did agree if he and I had hooked up in our younger wilder days that both of us would be either dead or so far under the jail they would have to pump sunlight in. Also from our conversations over the years we do know some of the same people. He did me a good turn about 3 years back now. My beloved 80 VIPs were getting worn out and he and another WRXer conspired for the other party to send me a pristine set of VIPs that after I changed the shafts became the infamous Machogans and are back in the front line bag now
