2 iron players - WITB?

Like the 2 iron on windier days. Was all about the 2 iron about a month ago but really started enjoying hitting the hybrid (was my least favorite club in bag). Play usually in windy conditions and haven’t had the problem of the hybrid ballooning into the wind (could be a product of the lower loft and shaft combo tho).

I use a TP UDI 2 iron for off the tee almost exclusively, but occasionally I have got good results out of the rough. I can't hit hybrids so when I use it out of the rough it's only to a green that is open in front and I can roll it up. Occasionally for kicks I'll use a Maxfli Australian Blade 2 iron that I've reshafted with a Tensei Pro White and that's slightly easier to get thru the rough.

Titleist 841 1-SW

Muirfield 20th 2-SW

Hogan PC 2-E

MacCobra Greg Norman 1-SW

VrPr 2-PW

All vintage would be set with MacGregor, Tony Penna, Tommy Armour Silver Scot or Bert Darbie Persimmon with an 8802 Style putter & Titleist Tour Balata ball.

My modern sets get the TM M5 Tour, TM Stage2 Tour 3 and Wishon Hybrid with a multitude of options to putt with & TM mTP5x ball.

It depends on the set I'm playing. Of the various permutations, most common would probably be 2-PW with a 52/58, or a 55/60, depending on the lofts of the sets in question.

Don't carry a 2 iron as often anymore; in my mid-50s and don't have the junk in the trunk I once had. ;)

It's situational, depending on the lie. I've hit even a 1 iron from the rough, but the lie was advantageous. Less pleasant lies, I'd never consider it.

I tend to hit a high ball, with a fair bit of spin, stopping the ball hasn't been a real problem, with the age-related caveat mentioned above.

For the months that we don't get much rain and it's windy on the coast, I use the Srixon U65 w/DI-105X. The bag goes D, 3w, 2i, 4-P, 52, 56, 60. I've been leaving the Apex MB 4i out more lately as I've been using a JPX HM 4i for the 3/4 slot that gets me a much higher flight. I'd never go back to a 2i in MB compared to the utility clubs available now. Even thinking of adding the HMB's to my MP20 SEL order this month as a modern update.

There was some great stuff done by @RichieHunt a few years ago where he showed the PGA tour swing speed correlation with bag setup. Basically, if you are moving it out there pretty well relative to the length of course you are playing, long irons aren't a great idea.

Without being harsh, I'd say that if you are reasonably expecting to have multiple approach shots from the rough that require this type of distance, I'd steer clear of the 2i. For instance, in my case, I use the 2i off the tee quite a bit, on a few long par 3's when they are into the stiff breezes we have on the coast of FL, and to go after par 5's in two when the scenario is favorable. I think I have hit my 2i as an approach club for my regulation shot into a non-par 3 one time this year. It happened to be from the rough, and all I did was hit and hope. It was match play and my opponent was 100+ yards down the fairway in front of me so I had to give it a swing. In medal play, I would have played much safer and tried to make an easy bogey and move on.

I would say that hybrids and fairway woods are preferable for almost everyone (myself included!). As far as my setup goes, it's in my sig and it's basically D, Fw, 2i, 4-G, S, L, & putter. Best of luck with your experiment, but I would caution you, the rabbit hole gets deep!

I love my 2 iron.

Driver is 290 - 310 depending on the day. 3 W I very rarely hit, if ever. 2 iron is my go to 245 shot off the tee when it is a shorter par 4 or I am playing from up front tees. Occasionally I will hit it off the turf into a par 5 green if I am feeling confident that day.

I alternate between a 19* hybrid and a MP-30 2 iron. The 2 iron is definitely the go to in order to keep the ball down, but pretty penalizing on mishits. They hybrid is point and shoot but a little more difficult to keep the ball down low. Would like to find a compromise but at some point will probably say good bye to the 2 iron as forgiveness becomes more important than trajectory.

3w - TM M2 Tour 15*

**2i - TM P790 UDI (gen1)**

3i - Mizuno MP18 Fli-Hi

4-pw - Mizuno MP18 MMC

GW/LW - Mizuno T7

I mostly use the 2i for tee shots on shorter par 4s, and the occasional approach into par 5s.

I did just get a new 5w - Callaway Epic Flash Sub-Zero that I may replace the 2i or the 3w depending on how the yardage gaps turn out. I'll probably adjust the 5w to 17* and see if where that ends up. It may be possible to have go Dr-5w-2i. Just not using the 3w very much for the courses I play frequently.
