Muni Lily He: The Official Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I know that purists hate tying looks to the LPGA but they're going to need it in the new media future.

What do you mean by new media future?

A fracturing media market and low attention span means less eyeballs watching almost all sports and a likely dramatic drop in TV money, particularly for the fringe sports.

It will be particularly bad for the LPGA (and other fringe sports) if most sports move to something like PPV instead of bundling.

So you believe at some point small market sports will no longer have the funding to be televised, and only be available on pay per view, or social media? So what`s your solution?

Solution to what?

Lower ratings are a result of people unplugging, dvr'ing and changing their priorities with regards to their tv viewing habits. PPV works for sporting events that are block busters with wide spread interest, I don't see people paying to watch golf or other sports on PPV. More likely, the contract values will decrease, which will allow secondary networks to win some deals to broadcast sports typically only seen on the major networks. It's possible a Major could attain PPV status, especially The Masters, but the tournament directors seem pretty content to control all of the broadcast rights to maximize exposure. A PPV model doesn't seem to fit with their overall approach to running their tournament. The US Open and Open are USGA / R&A events and it would be difficult for them to justify the cost of a PPV to watch, which leaves the PGA. I could see the PGA attempt to boost their revenue by testing a PPV model for their Major.

Golf is a niche sport that typically delivers predictable ratings because there isn't much else on to compete with it except during football season. Networks will pay pretty well for consistent ratings, even if they aren't great. If the network contracts go down it's possible it will impact the prize money they compete for and sponsorship deals.

I think the game of golf will be OK but unclear what happens to the LPGA when its TV money dries up. Perhaps it will continue to move towards Asia as the base as there is more natural demand for the product that I don't see here in the US.

I do think that PPV will become more prevalent but not in a "blockbuster" fashion - rather you will pay for what you want to watch with very limited bundling (i.e., the LPGA will have a streaming package for its fans but I'd strongly posit that the total revenues will be lower than currently).

Therefore, increasing the Q factor of the sport becomes important and having attractive players (to most but not all, legitimategolf....) would be one option.

LMAO at how just about every discussion that starts out being about a certain comely female, eventually turns into a very unsexy technical mansplaination discussion about marketing and promotion and ratings and revenues.

Also LMAO at all the people who seem to believe that the LPGA's blockbuster success is just around the corner... soon as the people in charge figure out what marketing means.

As much as I hate to say it you are correct on this part. Except for the core fans the LPGA=WNBA. Both have players that the average male fan at home thinks he could compete with. Both are a long ways in talent and popularity from their male brethren. Both will always be a niche sport on television in in person.

She played in the Monday qualifier three days ago, and didn't earn a spot in the field. She should have enough in earnings to skip Stage II of Q School, and go straight into Q-Series.

Muni finished the season with a scoring average of 72.705 in 44 rounds. I'm curious how many WRX'er could average less than a shot over par in 44 tournament rounds. She averaged 252 yds off the tee, hit 82% of her fairways, and 68% of her greens.

She's obviously not going to be climbing into the Rolex Top 10 in the very near future, but she has a decent game. She's certainly not the only player who earned a card in Q-Series last season who will be heading back to Q-Series this year. Rookies have a tough road. Hopefully a year's worth of experience will help next season.

It's pretty shameful to think that the people most critical of here are likely grump old men who aren't any good at golf. Kudos to her, for being successful on and off the course. I hope she get's her card back and has a better 2nd season

Old enough to know better, not good enough to play professionally.

Looks like she has a long ways to go. Hits a lot of fairways though! Probably needs to get some serious weight training in to up that swing speed. Pretty sure she has a team of people working to help her succeed.

I recall reading recently that she attempted to change her swing this year to try to keep up with the longer players, and once again succeeded in messing things up. She may have learned her lesson, and reverted to her original swing. That said, a little weight training is likely not going to hurt.

I personally hope she doesn’t bulk up - she’s just fine as she is.
