I will be on a family trip in York Beach the last week of July and was wondering if there are any good recommendations for my dad and I. Thank you in advance!

Ledges is one of my favorites in the area and it's right in York. http://ledgesgolf.com/

Not a fan of "Old Marsh" (Wells).

Depending on how far you're willing to travel - I'd also recommend:

to the north

Biddeford +Saco (Donald Ross design)

Cape Arundel (known for Pres Bush playing there).

to the south just across the boarder into NH

Portsmouth C.C. is real nice course although a bit pricy and semi-private so limited hours for non-members.

Breakfast Hill and even Pease is a nice layout (although more blue collar).

I played the Ledge years ago, can you elaborate on how walkable the course is? I am playing there this week and would love to walk if the course is set up for it (not that is just allows it...) Thanks!

I walk it 95% of the time. Some of the comments that I get are about the long distances between greens and tees, I say who cares, distance isn't the issue, it's the hills. With that stated, The Ledges has about 4 moderate hills and 6 tough hills.

Moderate

6th green to 7th tee

12th tee to to 12th fairway

12th green to the 13th tee

4th tee to 4th fairway

Tough

2nd green to 3rd tee.

3rd approach to the 3rd green.

And the worst, the entire 13th hole.

18th approach to 18th green

18th green to the clubhouse.

Hope that helps!

The concept of "tough" and "moderate" hills is very relative. For me coming from farther north, none of the hills at the Ledges is really all that tough. Links at Outlook has a couple of good hills on the back nine - but I don't find the rest of the courses near the coast having much in the way of hills worth mentioning. But that's just me - it all depends what you're used to. e.g. for someone coming from many Florida courses, they all might be tough.

And for me, the long distances between greens and tees (like at old marsh) is more an annoyance from the perspective of the time it takes than from the effort.

I've walked Essex County Club a few times, the schlep up 17 is a tough hill.

Weather permitting, I will try to walk The Ledges this week and report back about the hills. I've played, and carried bags on some hilly courses, from the assessment above it will be manageable. I am playing Belgrade Lakes this week too, that course I will take a cart!
