Deep Face Fairway Woods

Mainehacker21

Recommended Posts

In the market for a 3-4 wood that will primarily be used off the tee (hit hybrid off the turf mostly) that will take the place of driver on tighter holes. I know most people like the shallow face fairway woods as they use them off the tee and from the deck but I'm looking for the opposite. Heavily considering the Cally X hot Deep line but it got me thinking are there any others out there known for having a deep face that are best for tee shots?

I wish Callaway would make the obvious club which would be a an update of the x hot deep 3 wood but put it in the Epic Flash line with associated technology including adjustable hosel. I have played a deeper face Callaway 3 woods off the tee going back to the ERC fairway wood days and it has always been the strongest part of my tee ball game and only use driver for very long holes or when landing areas dictate it, think Henrick Stenson. Callaway are you listening, please make it happen. I don't need a flatened higher MOI shape, just a nice pear shaped, deep faced, big ass 3 wood like the x hot deep, big bertha II, and ERC.

If you can find a 2016 M2 "tour issue deep face" that is the best out there.

Very low spin so even in 3HL they are bombers, but still elevate easily off the deck.

You can find them on ebay. FYI - you know it's a "deep face" if it has a paint break on the hosel.

Another decent option is the 2017 M2 tour head

Yes! Is there really not enough of a demand?

x2 hot 3 deep, I carry one for tee shots that require a low shot or a fade, tough off the deck unless you have a perfect lie

I play the OG Callaway Deep and a TEE 3 wood

If i need to hit the ball on a rope, the OG Deep is the only club I trust.

+1, OG 3 deep is the best off the tee you can get. 14.5 is still usable off the turf on a perfect lie. 13 is going to be 10 short of driver at most.

If you find it a little wild with the stock shaft don't give up. The stock shaft plays on the softer side and about 1/2" longer than most. Can lead to some inconsistency if it's not a good fit.

If I can just butt in for a sec, I found a very faithful club for this task is actually the Aeroburner Mini Driver. Low spin like a 3 wood, distance wise just short of a driver. At address feels a lot like a big 3 wood (which is confidence inspiring for me). I use it on all par 4s that are tight or require a small cut.

How about the Mini Drivers? Original One, SLDR-S mini, Aeroburner Mini, Big Bertha 1.5, etc.

I use my 11.5 off the tee and it gives me a "less than driver" option that is longer than my 4wood.

The new model Mizuno looks like the deepest faced 3 wood this year from pics I have seen but I haven't seen it in person. Someone else who has might be able to say for sure. Maybe if their website wasn't built by a 2 year old they could show their product better.

Echo what the others said...I can't stand shallow face fairways, the shallow design makes me more likely to miss low on the face as I can't just hit down and through as easily...all in my head I know!

Two I'm tinkering with now are the OG 3 deep and the Deep Face 2016 M2 3HL. They both have deeper than average face but other than that they don't really compare at all. The M2 has a very small footprint and has a very small hitting area on the face. Certainly not intimidating at all off the ground, but definitely not the most forgiving fairway out there.

The 3 deep is definitely more on the "mini-driver" end of the scale, with a much larger hitting area. Not much use out of rough, but if you're backing a deep face 200+ cc 3 wood this isn't what you're looking for.

If you're using the club off the tee 80%+ the 3deep can't be beat IMO, but if you want a club you can hit off the ground as well the DF M2 (similar to the M2 Tour) might be worth looking at.

Haven't seen anything in the last few years that comes close to these two models

Yeah. I hit the original one and wasn’t super impressed. Would love to see a good 2 wood brought to market. There is a 3 deep with a shaft I like on callaway pre owned... so very tempted... but I’m also thinking about buying a 12 degree driver I like and putting a 43 inch shaft in it.

Shaft makes a big difference...I didn't even try the stock shaft that came with mine and threw in my favourite Aldila Tour Blue to make sure I was comparing apples to apples. Didn't notice much difference from the OG and the XR 3deep I had a few years back. Never tried the X2 hot but I know that came in a 2deep and 5deep as well as the 3deep.

X2 Hot Pro heads do the job off the tee and turf. Perhaps not as deep-faced as the X2 Hot 3Deep, but the Pro heads are deep enough and more versatile.

I believe the Tour Green shafts in these clubs shipped untipped, which is why they play loose. I have found success pulling them and tip trimming 1" to get them play true to flex and at a more standard length. Then add lead tap to the sole to get weight to your desired level.

I second this. My 915 FD 3 wood has a deep face and tiny head which makes me feel like I can pick it off the turf easily. Best of both worlds from the tee box or fairway. I also picked up a 5 wood FD on ebay, same one Justin Thomas uses, even smaller head and makes shots from the fairway incredibly easy. For the price, you cannot go wrong with 915.
