Phil has done something no one else in Golf has ever done

Phil has finished in the top 125 on the money list every year since 2000 making more than $1M every single year. There is one other player that can say the same.....Charles Howel III. Furyk isn't far behind

Nice, here is an piece on it...

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/a-nearly-26-year-streak-for-phil-mickelson-could-end-this-week-at-the-cj-cup

Nov. 27, 1993—“Mrs. Doubtfire” was the top draw at movie box office, Meatloaf’s “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)” was No. 1 on the music charts and Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera had just joined “The New Mickey Mouse Club.” It was also the last time Phil Mickelson was NOT in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Think about that for a moment.

Current World No. 1 Brooks Koepka was 3 years old. Tiger Woods was a senior … in high school. Nick Faldo was atop the World Rankings.

That amount of time in the Top 50 of anything is incredible but in a competitive sport when he is twice the age and more of the guys that he is now competing with is remarkable. I’m not sure that anyone will ever get close to that record. Anyone have any idea who has the next longest spell in the Top 50?

Not sure...looks like Rory has been top 25 since 2009 and DJ since 2010. Ernie Els was year end top 10 from 1994-2008, Top 20 1993-2010 & Top 50 1992-2010 (not sure if he ever fell out mid-year, but pretty consistent play for a long period of time).

I think it elevated their games. We saw some good golf during those years. It was glorious time.

David Duval broke through to #1, so it was possible.

Incredible accomplishment

I hope he plays well this week and keeps it alive, 2 under thru round 1. He looks as fit as he did back in his college days

Phils up periods just never synced up with Tigers down periods. And obviously no one in the history of golf was going to be #1 when Tiger was going well. Pretty impressive for Rory already to be over 550. If he stays healthy He's got a good chance to catch Phil. Don't feel like doing the math but he's probably got to get to his mid 40s without any lenghty injuries.

Phil had his chance at number one more than once including the 18th at Wingfoot. Looking back it kind of epitomizes his career- incredible talent but poor discipline and course management skills when it mattered most. That being said, most people would not have expected such longevity from this kind of player. If he gets a hot week with the putter he could still win.

I don't think you win 5 majors and 45 wins if your undisciplined with bad course management.

Phil always keeps it interesting. From his interesting club selection, bag composition etc to his shot making. In person, he’s extremely engaging with the gallery. Looks everyone he can in the eye and gives his thumbs up or hat tip. Always makes a point to say hi and sign autos for the kids. Some of it may be calculated, but it’s still good for the game and helps grow the sport.

After he won at Pebble and long before his weight loss at the end of the season Phil was playing quite awful by his own standards this year. Same thing happened in 2018. After he won early in the season at The WGC Mexico he played indifferently. Just not as bad as 2019. It's not his weight.

He can eat pancakes or trim down to Michael Phelps body fat levels - it's not going to change the positions he gets the club and clubface in moving down to impact in his swing. I'm as big of a Phil fan as you'll ever meet, but sadly, I think his ability to get consistency out of his swing is going to continue to leave him as he loses hand-eye coordination to old age.

I bet their wallets don't resent it. In 1996, the total purse on the PGA Tour was $69.1 million. In 1999, the total purse was up to $135 million. Thanks Tiger.

Well, he's only got to stay in the top 50 for 16 more years in a row to tie since he was 78th in the world in 2010.
