My classic iron collection thus far

Set that started my obsession with classic irons is the Hogan +1 irons. Then came the button backs,the fg51s, ken Venturi, MaCgregor Gemini and then the armour 986's. It's like a sickness that there is no cure for lol.

Apriciate it. It's hard deciding on which ones I'm going to play from day to day though lol. On the search now for Australian blades, murfeild 20th anniversary and a set of Jack niklaus JNP classics.

Very nice stuff----- Well it can be a sickness I know well but my wife puts up with it because it is cheaper than what I used to do Race Modified dirt track cars and mess with antique Harleys.

All of the iron models shown are excellent choices. You could find LH models of all but maybe the MacGregor GEMINI.

Played one summer with the Hogan 1+ irons, but to me, the '71 W/S Dynapower Buttonbacks are among the best iron model ever made. The Wilson FG-17 series kept a lot of followers, and those Tommy Armour RH Forged 986 Tour irons were among the best for the period, but even though it appears as a simple grind, none of the Tommy Armour forged LH 986 iron translations look as good as the RH model.

Lastly, the Orlimar Ken Venturi FG-64 grind may have to do with the fact Venturi won the 1964 US Open.

To me my favorite set to play is the fg-51s followed by the button backs. Only reason the fg-51 wins that race is because the sole grind is a little more forgiving. The Venturi pg-64 is a great iron (currently my gamers) but they just don't compare to the Wilson's in the feel department. I haven't had the tommy armours out yet I just purchased them but I've got big expectations for them. One of the best looking irons made in my opinion.

Very nice. I got a set of the Hogan 1+ as a high school graduation present in 1969. Played them four years in college.

I'm thinking about downsizing my current collection. I have a nice set of Hogan round sole 2-9, pc5 I believe 2-E, producers 3-E, radial 3-e missing 8, forged edge 3-e,f,s, some original sabers (need some TLC) 3 sets of grinds, gcd 3-e,f,s, a left hand set of FTX 3-e. I'm in PA, serious inquiries please. Pic of just a few I have laying all over my basement.

Yes the Venturi irons are a tribute to his open victory. He had a big hand at the design of them and they only made 1,964 sets to commemorate the open. 1999 was the production year i believe. They play really well.

I had a mint set of FG-51s that I very much regret selling. Those in my opinion are the best iron that never seem to be talked about. Did you buy them from me? ?

I did sell them on EBay, but that was a few years ago. They are beautiful! I will have to attach a picture of what I have currently...

Edit: These are just some that I have complete sets of that I play from time to time.

My bud Bear did play a set of Armours like yours when I first met him. Now he has strayed and went down another rabbit hole first new PXGs and now new Ping G-400s. But he is a club hoe and a half--- For him he will buy a club at Goodwill as quick as he will have fitted and order him a new set like he did with the PXG and Ping irons. He was griping on the phone the other night about the Pings and I told him he needed to get back to basics either get those Armours out or one of his numerous sets of Hogan Blades or even the pristine set of 925s I gave him a couple of year ago

I have a soft spot for the Hogan bounce sole 1+ set, as that was my first set of adult clubs. Also had the Hogan speed slot persimmon woods 1-3-4-5. Played them for years and wish I still had them. Nice sets there, all.
