Yocha-De-He is fantastic, but a long, boring hour drive from Sacramento. http://www.yocha-de-hegolfclub.com

Ancil Hoffman is my favorite course in Sacramento. http://www.golfancilhoffman.com/ There are other nice courses depending on where you are working/staying.

Morgan Creek is in Roseville. http://www.morgancreekclub.com/

Darhorse in Auburn http://www.darkhorsegolf.com/ .

Empire Ranch in Folsom is always in great shape, http://www.clubcorp.com/Clubs/Empire-Ranch-Golf-Club .

All good suggestions from the guys.

What is your HDC and how many rounds do you intend to play? What kind of course do you prefer?

The area has many excellent choices and you can play a course that fits your game. Maybe that will narrow down the suggestions.

> Callaway GBB driver (set D, -1, 9.5°) w/Kuro Kage Black TiNi 50, R-flex, 45.5"
> GBB 5 wood w/Kuro Kage Black TiNi 50, R-flex (set D, -1, 17°), 42.5"
> XR 7 wood (21°), 9 wood (23°) w/OEM Project X LZ, R-flex
> Callaway XR 4-LW w/ Recoil 660, F3, +.5", 2° up
> Golf Pride CP2 Wrap grips (blue)
> Odyssey White Ice Mini-T putter 35"
> Pinnacle Gold or Wilson 50 Elite

Great list except throw out Empire Ranch. I lived a few miles from that course and it's barely OK. Too many boring houses on certain holes and the 18th hole is a horrible closing hole.

Yocha is fantastic.
Dark Horse is fantastic but could use a little maintaining in certain spots.
Ancil is the best muni.
Morgan is a good test, but the lack of money shows big time on certain holes and in the bunkers.

Yocha de he is by far the best.

garywdixon,

my index is about 6 right now. I was going to just play Haggen Oaks (Mackenzie) and Darkhorse.

But these great suggestions, will drive to Auburn and try to play Catta Verdara and also Winchester. Apparently both these privates may allow non-member play at off-peak times?

thanks for all the helpful posts so far

Not sure if you are willing to make the hour drive to Yocha Dehe but with your good skills it would be an entertaining experience. It is a first class resort course that is always in magnificent condition.

If you happen to gamble (most golfers do!), the casino is right there and the course will comp some coupons to make it interesting.

Here is a link to a short article on the site:

The Ridge is one to add to the list, and it's near Dark Horse. Seems like most of the good courses are east in the foothills. I'm not a fan of the courses within Sac city limits as far as recommending them for a visitor wanting a great experience. Well, I guess Del Paso and North Ridge, but they are private.

Headed to Morgan Creek tomorrow, and staying over in Roseville. Looking for a spot for a bite to eat, and a few beers tomorrow evening with maybe some music.

Any good spots?

BTW - How much does Dark Horse dry out in the summer? I've only ever played it when Reno is shut down with snow, so in the winter months its always a bit wet in spots.

DarkHorse drys out in the summer. There's a lack of money to keep it maintained the way it should be.

Catta Verdera is a great course. I've never played Winchester. The Ridge is very affordable and extremely tight. So tight that I stay away.

Dark Horse is funny. It was suppose to be a private club. They built really nice bathrooms and then ran out of money for the club house. With no money the club house is just some big portable structures - proshop and restaurant. However, I really love the course design. It was ranked top 10 in California and has awesome views with very creative and fun hole designs. It's my favorite course that's sort of near me. I guess a Chinese firm purchased it, so maybe they'll put some money into maintainjng it and the club house, but hopefully it stays public. I've played it for $27-$31 with cart several times this past Summer.

...and the Ridge is tight. It's anxiety ridden on too many tee boxes looking at rattle snake OB land, but in the end It seems fair because it's so short.

I pay $25 twilight at Darkhorse and $5 for my junior golfer (includes cart). I don't mind driving an hour and 10 minutes from Eldorado Hills 5 times a year for that value.

I think Darkhorse is the best golf course for the money in the area. The layout is fantastic, but as others have mentioned the "clubhouse" is somewhat lacking. Condition can be hit or miss. I'd also skip The Ridgw as others have said. Yocha and Winchester are the best conditioned and best service in the area, both courses are great, but play way differently. Another solid layout and very much representative of the Sacramento Valley (the other courses are in hillier areas) is Teal Bend, condition is usually very good, it challenging and the greens are great.

G400 LST 8.5, Tour 75 stiff
G410 14.5, Tour 75 stiff
G410 19, 22, Tour 85 stiff
T100s, 5-gw, AMT White S200
Vokey, SM7, 54S, 58M

  • 4 months later...

update: was able to play only Winchester in late Jan 2014, due to heavy rain. That course was in good shape with smooth greens, despite soggy conditions.

The service was exceptional! A couple of staff came out during the first nine holes and offered hot coffee, another gave me a free towel, and at the end of the round another staff kindly said I could have lunch on the club.

Will definitely go back and play Winchester again, if in the area.
