Carolinas in December

I am in Charleston- recall many a Christmas’ in perfect 60’s* golf weather , but of course some not. It’s hard to understand, but truly weather here in winter will easily fluctuate by 15+* from day to day. South Carolina coast much different than North Carolina mountains, so if you are looking for the best chance of pleasant golf weather I would look coastal S.C. . But still be aware you run the risk of “cold”(relative of course). Research average hi/lo records for specific cities for a better idea, but generally we can golf year round here....course conditions generally fine but dependent on recent rainfall , which mostly doesn’t come until late winter (feb). I wouldn’t say it’s always “pleasant”, but Within a week or two it will swing and it will be. *tip- Kiawah runs a fantastic “golf or gourmet” special Nov -feb”..probably best value in golf anywhere”

Lived in NC for 26 years, southeast Virginia for 3 more. I've worn shorts on Christmas. I've also worn full coats. Anywhere from 70 to freezing is a possibility. The mountains are, obviously, the mountains. Far colder than the coast. If you want to come to the Carolinas, there are plenty of things to see and they tend to be less crowded in winter. If you want guaranteed 2 or 3 rounds of "pleasant" golf weather, probably look more to the south. If you're willing to play in most any conditions, you'll be OK here.

Last year we had a storm with ten inches of snow in December. In years past, I remember it being 9 degrees on Christmas. I also remember being comfortable in a sweater or light jacket. Chances are, it's going to be cold. I live in Winston-Salem, and the Pinehurst, Charlotte, and Raleigh areas are usually a bit warmer than we are. Go west, and it's usually cooler.

We're just making sure you have all the information. 99% chance that the courses will be open in Pinehurst. When I worked in Pinehurst for a year, I don't remember my course ever closing; we were open one day when the temps were mid-20s but didn't have any frost. I worked in Raleigh for 2 years and only remember a couple days when we closed. If you're willing to play no matter the conditions, it's a virtual certainty that you'll be able to play. If you want 70 and sunny...you might get it, but it's less likely. Here's an example...last year I played the day after Thanksgiving deal on #2. It was about 35 degrees when I got to the course. Got warmer through the day, probably about 60 degrees at sunset. Next day, it was still 60 when I woke up to go to the gym, but torrential rains. Around noon, the rain slacked off then stopped and it got a bit warmer; I played 9 holes at Tobacco Road, started off in my rain jacket, finished in short sleeves.

For the RTJ Trail, I lived in Alabama for 3 years, very few days when I was unable to play golf. That was in Mobile.

It's almost certain that you'll be able to play on this trip you have planned. Just be aware that weather can make some rapid changes.

yep ... rtj is rarely closed ... usually a frost delay here and there in b'ham ... except for some kind of snow event, the courses are open throughout winter ... i played pinehurst last year the weekend before tgiving ... think i had a vest over my short sleeve shirt, with shorts, for both days, sunday and and monday ... sunny weather that might have been a touch chilly in the morning ...

you got your answer haha. South carolina wise, the coastal area is a crapshoot. Typically late january/feb are the colder months, but there have been years where Christmas has been bitter or even a little icy. Last christmas I played and it was close to 70 or so. heres averages

I'm in Hilton Head. Temps here usually average in the 60's in Dec and Jan. We can get days in the mid to upper 70's and we can also get days in the upper 40's to low 50's. Just never know, but for the most part December /Jan are usually 60's and feel pretty nice on the golf course with a sweater or 1/4 zip pullover.

Was in Myrtle Beach area last December. Had about 7 inches of rain, spread out between 3 inches the Saturday we arrived, Sunday through Monday, and then Friday until we left Saturday another 4. It was actually enough we were considering heading to a hotel near MYR(we were staying in Sunset Beach NC) so we didn't risk a flood keeping us from reaching the airport. Charleston was flooded from that same system.

Wednesday and Thursday were really nice, and had it not been for the soaking wet ground, I would have been really kicking myself I didn't bring my clubs.

All I know is in December it won't be 98 frickin' degrees like it is on September 26! Winter can't get here soon enough for me, this year.

1/4 zip pullover, mmmmmmmmm....

Feels like 109 today in Columbia. This is ridiculous.

Columbia is the hottest place on the planet. Barring the Sahara.

Don't mind that I'll never likely go back, other than to stop in and get some chicken from Rosewood dairy bar on my way through.

Great thanks! Have you ever played there in December? I know there is a good chance of it being cold, but how is the course?

Ive played a few times in late November/early December. Course holds up just fine. It will generally be brown in the fairways but they are in good shape and the greens have always been in good shape.
