2020 Scottsdale trip line up

We have our annual trip south coming up in June of 2020 and in the initial stages of course selection. This will be our 4th trip and the heat is not an issue. We have pre-selected our 5 courses to play our 6 rounds. One caveat is that we want courses with in 30 minutes of the house we stay at which is two blocks East of Orange Tree Golf course.

Eagle Mountain 18

WeKoPa 36

Boulders South 18

Papago 18

TPC Stadium 18

Is there any courses we should play and if so which should we drop.

Drop The Cholla Course at We Ko Pa, Papago, and Eagle Mountain. Swap for Troon North Pinnacle Course and Grayhawk 36 holes. Also, it may be tough to get the south course at boulders. I noticed this summer that they weren't allowing you to select the course when booking like you used to be able to. Sometimes you got the north, sometimes the south, sometimes a combo of 9's. Members and resort guests seemed to have priority on the South Course.

Too many gimmicky holes are why. Note: the reviews are more of a locals thing; for out of town folks, playing the course once is fine and you will probably enjoy it. But when you are local, there are better choices.

As a Wekopass holder from out of state travel there 2-3 times a year last year I played Saguaro 5 times Cholla 2

It's a nicer version of Las Sendas. There's an entire thread of why people hate that course. Many blind/deceiving tee shots. You can see about 150-200yds from the tee and you're guessing for where to hit it off the tee. If you look at a yardage book or app, you won't be able to see. It's not until you're on the tee box that you realize you're in for a long, frustrating round.

I think Cholla is an OK to Good golf course, not up to the same standards as other Scottsdale courses, but certainly not terrible. Although, having said that, I won't play it again. I hate the first 8 holes. Gimmicky, blind shots, and dumb routing. The architect did the best he could, but the front 9 layout is just ... bad.

Don't let people scare you off of Cholla. It is a great course, it just requires solid tee shots. But if you have "tee shot" challenged golfers in your group, then it can be a long day. Several Fairways that run diagonally from the tee box with some risk reward tee shots. Usually a short enough forced carry available for most golfers, but if you take the more aggressive line the bigger the risk and the bigger reward if you pull it off.

I think your mix is a good representation of courses that can play differently.

As of now our line up of courses is:

Eagle Mountain 18

WeKoPa 36

Boulders South 18

Grayhawk 18

TPC Stadium 18

We have played at WeKoPa every trip down as it is a group favourite. We are all “tee shot” challenged to some degree but we have no issues keeping it in play or the forced carries.

This is our 6th trip South in seven years and each time I ask, the boys all wanna come back to Scottsdale. The other year was a one off as we attended the Masters in 2017.

This year with only playing 18 on 4 of the 5 days we will look to take in other activities that Scottsdale has to offer.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback and input.

I'd take TPC Champions off and replace it w/ Quintero. Quintero is the gem of the Phoenix area after Estancia. We go several times a year and always have WeKoPa's 36 or Quintero in the rotation every time w/o fail.

Understandable! Have you made the trek all the way out to Wickenburg Ranch? We've done that several time from the northern part of Scottsdale where we stay and it is a serious trek, makes Quintero feel close.

Rules these days... flag stays in, foam noodle fills up 75% of the cup... I've seen more balls hit the flag stick and trampoline out of the hole than I care to remember in the last month, one person per cart, very limited facility operations. No dining, one restroom on the entire course... just letting you know what you guys are in for. We may hit peek virus by Memorial day so by the 20th we may be on our way down with restrictions.
