Torn Meniscus Recover time!!!!!!!! UGH

Recommended Posts

I've been playing golf with a torn meniscus in the left knee for a year..... And A torn Left Calf.......

Today It swelled up like a watermelon. The pain was unreal... The Knife is waiting..... Looks like end of June to get back on course. 6 weeks If no surgery 8-10 if Surgery find out this week.

Awesome.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrr Wait for the swelling to go down and golf again in a few weeks. Ya that's what I'll probably do.

Good think is I'll buy all new clubs in July to make me feel better.

Had it in both knees. Do you know how bad the tear is?

It depends on what kind of shape your in and how strong your knee is, but I was running again both times within a month or so. Golfing in a few weeks. Not a huge thing usually. The calf may be your bigger issue long term.

not huge. Last time I had it checked surgery wasn't needed. My calf is healed but acts up once in a while. bball is impossible now but I can get around most sports without having to jump.

I tore the meniscus in my right knee (LH golfer) in April 2009. I kept playing, wearing a brace, until I had the meniscectomy (no repair) in June and was playing again in August. I had a lot of discomfort after the surgery, but the pain subsided right at 4 weeks, just as my doctor said it would. I did PT for 10 weeks or so after the surgery. I was playing again at 8 weeks, but honestly it took a year before the knee felt normal again. Don't overdo it and don't rush back. I hated missing 2 months of an already short season here in MA, but it was worth it to do the PT so as to not re-injure it again. And you don't want to introduce compensations into your swing to protect the knee that may lead to other issues down the line. Best of luck with your surgery.

If you wait all you will be doing is postponing the inevitable. I've had it done twice and it's no big deal in terms of pain. Only thing painful is not being able to swing a club for a while. One suggestion from experience if you get the surgery. Don't swing the club before you are supposed to. :nono:

I had mine done twice when I was a younger. Football injury the first time, they trimmed it, then I pushed it too early skiing that same year and they removed the rest of it (lateral). I was young, but as I recall the pain wasn't all that bad and recovery was very short. The Dr told me the biggest risk was exactly what happened, since the meniscus has no nerves it's easy to do stuff too soon so you just have to follow their orders even if you feel great.

All these years later that meniscotomy has caught up to the knee though, will be under the knife again within the next year or two I think.

I had both knee tear like that before I had my double knee replacements. I was hitting balls within 2 weeks post op and was cutting grass in a week after surgery. For me, I didn't even have to take pain pills post arthroscopic surgery. Good luck with it but 8-10 weeks before playing again for a meniscus seems like an awfully long time. I was 14 weeks for a full knee replacement.

I think it depends on the extent of the damage to the meniscus.

My surgery was in 2004 and most of the damage was from playing competitive basketball and later volleyball. I had played thru/with some discomfort for quite some time wearing whatever brace would make it bearable. Things kept getting worse and worse so I sought out opinions from a couple of ortho's. They both had the same opinions so I opted for surgery. Initial thoughts (via MRI) was a little damage to the medial and lateral meniscus. Once in surgery things were a little worse. Ended up removing 80% of medial meniscus and 60% of lateral meniscus. BUT the big crusher was microfracture surgery. Evidently, I had let the meniscus tears (ortho called the meniscus shredded) go for so long that they "wore" away the cartilage from the femur. Recovery time was 8 weeks on crutches (no weight on left leg) with PT starting at 2 weeks. The killer was I could no longer do sports that require running or jumping since the impact was essentially bone-on-bone. Full disclosure : the ortho didn't say I couldn't do impact sports... what he said is that I could but I would be back to see him in 5ish years to get a knee replacement (yeah - i don't think so). The good news was I could still snowboard and play golf.

Hope this help....

I say if surgery is needed, get it done, I was hit by an IED in Iraq and tore both knees and my back was impacted as well, the back was the biggest issue, I was out of the game for 20 long months, but able to walk by week 5, I started with putting at week 7, PT is great and still do it to this day, don't wait it will pay off on the long run...good luck

It has been my pleasure, I am set to retire this December and transitioning out in mid August, 26 years is enough, my son took over and he is a Marine now, so very proud and happy to call it a career...had a great time (yes injuries included) met so many people and experienced many great things...

  • 3 weeks later...

tear was minor on the outer edge (red zone) of knee - it's been a week and I feel great actually. Ill be playing in a few weeks.

The Friday Before I had a Septoplasty (deviated septum) and THAT PAIN WAS 200x worse. The nose is still in pain after 2 + weeks compared to the knee - I feel like I could run but I wouldn't be able to catch my breath!!

PT starts next week - i actually chip and putt today hahaha.

  • 3 years later...

Of all things, two weeks ago I was diagnosed with a torn meniscus. I tripped on the edge of an area rug and lunged forward on my left leg . . . spent five days limping around and finally got around to make an appointment. I'll find out the results of the MRI next week. I never want to go through this again. I'm 65 with minor arthritis in the knees. Does anyone know of good exercise routines for knee strength? Doc said no leg extensions. I suppose lunges would not be good, but maybe seated squats?

A torn meniscus isn’t a strength issue. No exercises will help. Fortunately, the surgery these days is nothing to worry about.

had each knee done over the past 6 years..from tennis. It can be some of the most painful debilitating symptom. could hardly get out of bed without some serious dancing and maneuvering . The surgery was a god send. was back playing tennis in 8 weeks
