Tiger's Putter Specs

Can we be certain that Tiger only has one gamer? Or can anyone confirm his gamer has been refinished? Because looking at some of the close-ups I see two different putters. One looks very worn with dents and nicks and most notably the Titleist doesn't have the red paintfill. While the other is clean with the Titleist having the red paintfill. Also I noticed that in one photo the cherry dot on the heel of the red paintfilled cleaner putter is worn, so if it was refinished why not refill the cherry dot?Can anyone confirm this?

Ah, the second putter conspiracy . . . :)

 

 

Most of what you note is just from the putter being newer (still has paintfill, not many dings) and progressing through the years of use and abuse (dings, scratches, paintfill has fallen out or has been removed).

 

Of course, at any time Tiger could have the putter cleaned up of dings and scratches and have new paintfill put in--but it appears he wants it the way it is.

The pictures on the link posted in this thread are of Tiger's putter from several years ago. Notice the Titleist equipment shown as well. Tiger stopped playing the 975D 7 or 8 years ago, IIRC. Tiger has only one gamer and that is from a source that knows Steve Williams personally. Not an acquaintance but a personal friend.

Putter refinishers typically remove the head and then put it under a grinding wheel to smooth out the surface.

Unfortunately, this process rteduces the head weight and also changes the original shape of the putter head. Finally, the reinstallation of the head to the shaft is usually a different orientation from the factory original.

Tiger I am sure is aware of all of the above.

I just took my old Ping Anser, Scottsdale, and had it lengthened to 35 along with a new blacked out pingman. Head weight is 325, but after some lead tape on bottom it’s right at 335, my putts now have a tiger roar when they come off the face!

Indeed! I still remember a long story posted by Dave Billings about making a putter for TW. In the Nike years, Tiger used a couple of Method putters with the myth of “fake grooves”.

 

After the Masters, SC sold a replica for $15k although not sure if 350g is what Tiger currently is gaming.

I can't think of where, almost positive it was on an equipment podcast which had insights on Tiger's putter from actual accounts but.... the original Scotty made for Tiger was measured to weigh in at like 340g or something. Tiger wanted it a tad lighter so Scotty took the putter and drilled the whole on the back of the face to take the extra weighting out. He then drop filled the new whole with the red paint which made it 324g. Plus whatever lead tape Tiger has applied over the years. I'll look for the site or mention but I remember this specifically.

* on the rare occasion he is playing a tournament with slow greens he has added lead tape to the sole of the putter, raising its head weight by 2 to 4 grams and swing weight up to the D3, D4 range.
