GolfWRX’ers please help me out. I was able to demo a set of $taper 130s on GCQuad 5/7/9iron MP 20. Really enjoyed them and was able to get a set of MP 20MBs on the BAY (first mistake probably haha) had a few good rounds and range sessions but couldn’t help that something didn’t feel the same (even though same heads were used) I brought them to my local club builder and the 7 iron cpm was 340 at 37-1/4in!!! How is this possible?

This is why shaft CPMs should be thrown in the trash and forgotten about when comparing brand A to brand B. It means nothing except comparing one shaft of the same make, model, and similar weight to one another for "flex". It has no relevancy for just blindly spec'ing one shaft or for comparing shaft brand A model X to shaft brand B model Y. Also, this is butt frequency, which gives you no bearing whatsoever on how the rest of the shaft is designed. The $-Taper, like all other KBS shafts, has most of it's stiffness in the upper quadrant of the shaft, meaning they are always going to frequency stupid high relative to the rest of the length of the shaft. Following this, KBS's signature design profile is a stiff butt, medium middle and mid to slightly softer tip, basically the opposite of a dynamic gold. That soft middle is what gives them their signature feel.

My guess if it feels off, likely they lie isn't correct or the swing weight is different from the demo you tried. It doesn't mean you ended up with a crazy stiff batch of shafts that are actually XXXXX flex. Another example of why CPM should be ignored. I had a long drive player come through my shop and my builder CPM'd his shaft just for fun (as I thought it would be in the high 200s, if not low 300s) being the XXX it was. It CPM'd at the butt at 253, no more than your average "stiff" shaft, however, this one probably got mega stiff just under the hands and stayed that way through the rest of the shaft.

Don't worry about, you're likely fine and there is something else wrong with them from the demo....which is a lesson in of itself to always order your clubs exactly as spec'd.

Wow, really appreciate the time took to write that. They are still at the club builder who is going to get back to me after taking grips off (needed to change grips to my preferences anyway) to see if they were hard stepped or not. Also swing weight was the first thing we looked at. Again thanks for your knowledge, greatly appreciated.

Yeah I hear that. My 7 iron was off standard mizuno spec 37 inches. So they are looking into swing weight and making sure they aren’t hard stepped. Thanks for your insight.

You have to be very careful about CPM measuring shafts and how you compare clubs. Every club builder has a machine but results vary from each builder especially when compared to what OEMs may claim. Frequency is more of a custom club building guide too. I own four sets of KBS shafts including $ taper in "S". I tested all of them in the same clubs and the only profile that was high bend, stiff butt and normal CPM numbers were C-Taper "S." The others have more action or bend in the mid to lower section of the shaft. Butt will be stiff yet not so much down to the tip. The $ Taper is an in-between club IMO designed for a unique person.

Much appreciated. I really liked the characteristics of my KBS Tour V 125. Me being a typical wrx-er tinkering haha I thought the $ taper would bring the flight down a little. Again something I realize needs to be addressed with technique rather than shaft.
