Modifying a PING Redwood Anser

I love my Anser X and have been playing around with the idea of finding a Redwood Anser to have modified. It would involve (obviously) removing the plumber's neck and installing a double bend shaft. What other things would I need to consider and who would be best to outsource this to?

Weight would be a big consideration, right out of the gate. Cutting off a plumbers neck drops about 40 grams. Can you tungsten powder down the shaft to gain it back? Yes, but even with tungsten, thats a lot of powder. Another factor is the nickel plating that is on the Redwood series of putters. They are milled using 303SS, but all of them were nickel plated for some reason.

I am all for modifying your existing putters, but sometimes cost and other details make it a better decision to find a putter more like you are trying to create and purchasing that one, already built.

LaMont - Would tungsten plugs be an option? What's the average cost for that?

I think what Lamont is getting at is that this project is certainly doable, but likely to be very expensive. By the time you cut the neck, install a nub to accept the double bend shaft, drill and install weights in the sole and then clean the finish up...the cost will be crazy. I’m just guessing here, but I’m thinking this would be at least $500.

You're probably right. While it could be cool, I think it's not an economically-sound idea...

Tungsten plugs are the most expensive modification usually. They are generally 2-300? Removing the old neck...drilling a new hole for the double bend...removing the old nickel...adding a new finish...

 

The PING Redwood anser is an awesome putter, but it's likely best to leave it as is

 

You can get a brand new custom blade from guys like SGC or Blacklab for less than the cost of those modifications.

Yeah, in typical WRX fashion, sold it and now regretting it. I know the new owner is really happy with it tho;)

I've definitely been there. I just bought a WRX Anser and might be considering selling it as I just bought another mint condition Anser X. Sickness and regret. What a cycle...
