Ping S58-S56: Something Wrong or Just the Bubba Factor?

jholz

Recommended Posts

I've been intrigued by the idea of picking up a cheap set of Pings to work on over the winter. There are a couple of i models that I am considering, but am particularly interested in the S series irons right now.

With the Bubba factor, it seems like the S59 and S55 models got all of the attention and most of the play from both pros and amateurs.

But what about the 58's, 57's, and 56's?

Did any Ping staffers ever put any of the S58-S56 models in play?

Were these models appreciably worse than the 59's or 55's?

Anyone still playing any of the 58-56 models? How do you like them?

there is a reason why s55 gets mentioned much much more frequently than its previous generations. Prob because its the best one out of all of its predecessors. Thats my take on it.

Now i cant give you any feedback thats worth a d*mn thing because ive never played the prior generations but i can tell you this; I am literally stuck with them. I couldnt replace them, and i have tried many of times over the past 3/4 yrs. i hit them so solid and they feel just like dare i say forged. (you dont get the ball "sticking" to the face feeling like a real forged does); its slightly different. Its a great feeling club nonetheless.

im on the hunt with some srixons but the lack of demo is preventing it from happening. But i can also tell you this, even if the s55 gets replaced by the srixons, they will be forever in the golf closet as backup. That is how much i love them, and im sure im not alone.

Thanks for the response. The 55's are certainly on my radar, as are the 59's honestly. Both of those clubs had/have great reputations. It's not like I would mind owning a set of either of them.

But, being something of both an oddball and a cheapskate, I couldn't help but notice that the 58's-56's were easier to find, and could be purchased more cheaply on the used market. So, I thought maybe I could identify a sleeper in there somewhere.

But, perhaps I'll just man up and spend more than $200 on a set of project irons!

Thanks lefty! I've heard a couple of other people say similar things about the 56's. Outside of the 55's and 59's, they seem to get the most love. We shall see if anyone else concurs with you.

S56 and S55 are my all time favourite irons and I’ve used both since release. The feel is slightly firmer in the S56, a solid feel. S55 is a bit more muted, not really a cast feel. The long irons in the S55 are noticeably more forgiving, particularly on toe strikes.

As far as looks, they look the same.

I played an S59 Tour set, 2-PW, for a while. I’ll admit, they were really fun to play. You’re not going to find much forgiveness there though if that’s something you want.

I didn’t like the shapes of the S58’s. They only lasted a season in my bag and it’s because I had to play them.

Choosing between S59-s56, I’d happily play S56 for the rest of my life assuming I could get a set with the right specs.

It’s a truly great lineup. None of them are bad. I think the 58 looks great. Supposedly the most forgiving of the bunch. The 57 spun too much according to many reviewers, but perhaps that was related to the non-conforming grooves (which is only relevant if you are playing in certain high-level competitive events because they’re otherwise still legal until 2024.) You also can find sets of S57’s with USGA conforming grooves that Ping produced for pro players during the transition.

The 58 head is slightly larger than the others, but certainly not large.

My opinion is the 57’s look really cool and I’d love to hit them. If they spin too much, all you’d have to do is strengthen the lofts a degree or two. That’s the great thing about Pings. Plenty of bounce to play with, so going stronger doesn’t affect playability.

The one currently in my bag: S55 with Project X Rifle 5.5. I have many other irons but I like these and my Mizuno MP59’s the most (has its own cult following). The S55 is a nice combo of medium bounce with a thin sole, while the Mizzy is low bounce, thin sole. As a comparison I find the S55 4 iron is easier to elevate than the MP59. I like the s56 but they are so much like the s55. That’s why for a second head I’d look at the two before it.

You can't go wrong with the S55. Lots of love for them here. I made the switch to the Srixons 745's and wouldn't go back, but I came form S57's. Great clubs, I still play them in a travel/backup set. I really didn't care for the original colors so I stripped the colors off and made them naked.

You can't go wrong with a nice set up S57s. I had no issue with too much spin with them...

my suggestion is if you go s59 make sure you get the s59 tour version (has the ferrule), they play and set up different than the standard version. I played the s59's all the way through my college career and up until the s55's came out (which is what I'm still playing). For my swing the s58-s56 did not go through the turf very well and they were unforgiving compared to the s59's. But the s55's were better in all categories for me, so thats why they are still in the bag...but I'm really hoping the iblade replacement kicks the s55's out, I'm ready for something new :)

Thanks. I played S55's for a while as well... wish I never got rid of them, but didn't care much for the S56.

I just picked up a set of S59's yesterday which I'm going to reshaft over the winter. I got the non-Tours which don't have a ferrule, that was my preference, I like the Ping non-ferrule look. I don't put a lot of faith in the Maltby MPF numbers, but these are a 660 - really high for a blade type iron, but we'll see if that means anything on the course. The S59's have progressive offset which is 0.18" by the time you get to the 4 iron, probably more than I wanted but Ping did a really good job of hiding the offset, at address it looks like much less. I thought Ping would have reduced the offset more in the S series moving forward, but its still 0.15" in the S55. The blades in the mid to long irons are somewhat longer heel to toe than what you might expect for a players iron, I'm pretty sure Ping reduced blade length as they moved towards the S55. What I really like about the S59's is the shape of the PW and short irons, somewhat more square than Ping's more recent i-series and blade offerings - for me, the current Ping set wedges just look too rounded and spoon like.

With the S59's I find that every iron in the set works for me visually, which almost never happens. I think the S59's are probably a good choice for a player like me who wants to try blades but doesn't really have the game for them. More accomplished players will likely have a preference for something in the S57-S55 range which are more compact and have more of a players iron appearance.

I've had all of the S series Pings and enjoyed each set. The 57s & 58s were my least favorite. 56s are great irons...very crisp/solid feel without being harsh gave a great sense of power when flushed. Also great out of the rough. The 55s feel softer and are as forgiving as a compact blade style iron can be.

My S55 irons are as an enjoyable set of irons as I’ve ever owned. I also have a set of Mizunos which obviously feel different but a well-struck shot with the S55 iron is sublime.

Thanks again for the responses everyone. I really appreciate all of the feedback. I can't say it is making my decision any easier!

As far as the Bubba factor is concerned, I think a lot of factors played into his being the "premier" Ping staffer and as a result, our opinions of the Ping S series have been skewed just a bit by this.

Hunter Mahan, apparently, liked all of the S series irons and particularly liked the S56, but the release of these irons happened to coincide with the collapse of his game. Was it the clubs? I have to think not.

So, I am currently at the point where I think pretty much all of the S series irons are fine - but perhaps one model may appeal to a specific player, while another model may not.

Knowing my own game, I am leaning towards the S56 at the current time. If I can find a good deal on the S55s, I will probably go with those.

I too am in the boat of 'never should have gotten rid of my s56's". I had KBS tour stiff in them. Since then I did try the s55, but coincided with playing less so they were too hard to game, Then went to iE1 with PX6.0 to iblade with PX 6.0. I must not be in the same boat of others wanting the "soft feel" as I don't appreciate PX to be overly harsh. Now moved on to i500 with PXLZ 6.0.

As for for Bubba, I suspect that s59 and s55 are less GI than rest of I series and especially current iblade for him. Not sure why he's not going to the blueprints. maybe its the blend he gets with the cavity back wedges.

I have only played the S56 and S55 but for me, there was a huge difference. The S56 feels more like the iBlade to me, clickier or maybe more firm, than the 55. I also find the S55 easier through the ground, but I'm sure that is just me and my swing. I have been in love with my J15 CB but something about the S55 keeps me coming back. I have felt this way about only a few sets.... Z745, J15 CB, and the S55.

Interesting. What would you say is the biggest difference between the 55s and the 56/58s? If they are very close, what distinguishes them? Feel, turf interaction, forgiveness, ball flight, performance?

I appreciate your opinion, so would just love to know more. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Don't skip on the 58's too soon. These are great irons. The 58s offer tons of forgiveness and are very workable. The 58s will give up some distance to modern designs of mishits but I found that they hold their line very well. I am playing around with a set of 55s right now I picked up on the cheap and they are near mint. I found the feel of the 55s to be the best I have ever experienced in a ping iron. I did lose some forgiveness over the 58s and my current ie1, but I feel these I could easily game the 55s forever. The Modus shaft in the 55s is a perfect fit for this iron in my opinion. I gamed the KBS shaft in the 58s and loved that shaft in them I game the Project X 5.5 in the ie1 and love that shaft in them, so maybe I am not too picky. The Modus just feels very smooth in the 55s. Good luck with your search I look forward to seeing the outcome.
