Yeah, actually it wasn't his old clubs, he didn't bring his clubs with him. So the heavy sounding shots were with I believe JPX Tour or Forged that they tried a few different lies on. Finally got him into the MP20's and because of the narrower sole, he was making much better contact, he had enough club speed, I think upper 80's with a 6 iron to hit those effectively Even his mishits were solid enough that he was reaching the green, where the mishits with the Forged were heavier and chunkier and coming up short.

I did see it, and I’ll preface this by saying that I watch and like all their video’s. But honestly, iron fitting are night and day different between real grass and an indoor mat. But you definitely could tell by sound that he hit the blade cleaner

Ahh I see. I just assumed that they were his old clubs. I guess that’s what happens when you skim through things, possibly miss vital information haha!

Goes to show that larger doesn’t always mean better results for every player.

That's the difference with having a good fitter who thinks a little outside of the box

Exactly and I had a very similar experience last week at a fitting at TPI. I went in with my G700 and hit both the T300 and the CNCPT 01. The 300 was by far the best for me due to less ground contact than the other two. Both of them have wider soles and my old and not correct thinking was that as a higher handicap--14.9---the bigger the sole the more forgiving it would be.

But I went from smash factors of 1.24 or so in the G700 and CNCPT to 1.34 in the T300.

This. I told myself I would not buy a set of irons again based just on a mat fitting. I have talked with TXG about outdoor fittings and they are perhaps working towards that though they claim it's to keep consistency. In reality, it's just easier for the fitter to have everything there. Golf is played off grass not mats.

I’m pretty sure TXG have gone to great lengths to pick artificial turf swatches that as closely as possible emulate real grass. In one regard, a mat will give more consistency than real grass if the range is anything like my local club’s pock marked, sandy shaggy range.

I’m sure if TXG were able to take all of the options they have and do fittings from grass then they would. However it just wouldn’t be logistically feasible.

They could however do indoor fittings on the mats and get the best two options and then go to an outside grass range And have the player see which one they like best from the grass and have an LM backup their choices.

Ian does seem to have a ton of knowledge on which club and shaft options would work best based on the swing he has in front of him, he seems to be able to explain how those options may react out on the course, I’m certain I’ve heard him mention the benefits of certain iron head designs when he is fitting a player and how it would play on the course.

I really enjoy TXG’s channel. Watch it a lot at night at work when it’s slow. I’m a firm believer in being fitted as well. Did wonders for me.

That being said, I hated the ping G’s when I started out. Could not get along with the large heads and wide soles. Found that while player irons might punish me on poor strikes, the ball at least maintained some distance as opposed to an ugly chunk with the G’s.

> Did anyone see the youtube vid of the guy who was fit or a full bag of Mizuno clubs? It was a very well done video and the TXG guys called the MP-20 blades "Game improvement" for this guy.....was very interesting.

I love the TXG videos because they are all about the results and they sometimes have some counter-intuitive stuff.

For example, I am exactly like the guy that won (bastard!) in that I just hit narrow soled clubs better. Like him, my predominant miss tends to be a little fat and a narrow sole just works better for me.

I genuinely think the low bounce soles brushed on the mat fine and he’s going to take pelts behind the balls in soft Florida turf. Can you hit a hybrid off the deck without fatting it? That’s got a wide sole. Agree they do amazing work but I think it may have been different off grass. Moreover, directionally he hit the MMC much straighter. I’d have bent them 2 weak to add bounce and it may have produced a much better result.

Nobody is saying that. Fact is he was still hitting it fat with the blades. I think hitting off real grass would have yielded different contact results with that miss.

Definitely true and has to be considered. However.... unless you're a country club guy or whatever... not many fitters, at least by me, offer real grass and turf. Maybe in warm weather states like FL or CA this is more common, but the "good" places to get fit like Club Champion or True Spec still use mats. That's why IMO a fitting isn't the full story, requires a bunch of rounds under your belt with the fit clubs to really see what works.

At the end of the day, Ian has to fit Michael into Mizuno clubs (and current ones, too) so the MP blades were the best fit for him given the swing he brought that day. Plus, his contact overall didn't seem too fat... wasn't his smash like... 1.33 with the 6i? That's pretty good while using blades on GCQ. It may turn out these clubs aren't right for him in the long term but it's still a pretty cool thing... imagine getting an entire bag of any brand for free! Crazy stuff.

That was extreme sarcasm. I have complete and utter faith in Ian's fitting capabilities. I'm sure there are members on this board just as capable, but Ian is the one who actually had to do the fitting and make fitting decisions.
