NO No No you will not be ushered off the vintage classic forum for putting modern shafts even graphite into a vintage head. I do not think the 88 redlines have a shaft pins. Go for the #3 Apex. I put a set of Apex #2s which is a Senior flex shaft in my 80 Macgregor VIPs. My back up set is a set of Nicklaus Muirfields with Apex 3 shafts. Actually I can not tell the difference between the shafts. I do know that the Apex shafts made the Macs one smooth hitting club compared to the stiff Brunswick shafts in the VIPS and the DG-S-300s in the Muirfields. Actually my foray with the #2 shafts was a mistake because I was not familiar with Hogan shafts that much at the time. Augie on here informed me after the fact that I had installed senior shafts in the VIPs. I did not care because they hit smooth and did not hurt my back. Yep sometimes you have to experiment around especially if you are using pulled shafts set up from different brands and styles of heads. In fact I soft stepped the #3s in the Muirfields to get them to hit for me like the #2s in the VIPs. I have always been of the school of thought if you like a head get them where you can play them

'88 Redlines are pinned. Pin removal takes time, but isn't otherwise tremendously difficult. My method (there are many) is to drive the pin partway out with a nailset, then tape the hosel to protect it, before grabbing the pin in a vice and levering the club off of it. The shaft is then removed as per normal.

The hard part will be finding a set of apex 3 pulls to swap in. You may be looking at having to buy a donor set of Radials, Edge's, Directors, Medallions, etc.

Get the shaft that helps you out, best of luck!

Thanks for the helpful inputs...greatly appreciated...It would be VERY difficult to sell the Apex 4 Redlines, as Ive had them since new and have the full set...PW - 1 iron...have looked on the Bay for Apex 3 redlines and they range from mid 300's to well over $1k. :o Will keep an eye out at local pro-shops in the "experienced" section.

That changes things! Particularly the 1 iron. I woukd suggest buying something like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ben-Hogan-Radial-Set-of-2-E-PW-Irons-Apex-3-Steel-Shafts-Regular-Flex/133228821181?hash=item1f050e7abd:g:GFEAAOSwg9RdwBhU and just doing the swap. I'd happily move along my surplus Apex 3's, but I only have 3-9 with a missing 7. Or 3-E with missing 8, but from the post-1999 generation. Not exactly worth it.

It will be hard to find a redline 1 or even 2 iron, I know that much.

That is exactly where my donor shafts came from both the #2 and #3 from 2 sets of what I call the funky headed Directors. Actually when I pulled down the first set of Directors for the #2 shafts I saw evidence of where those shafts started life in another set of irons. some of them had the shaft pins partially intact. Those shafts went into my VIPs creating what we call my infamous set of Bastardized Macs or Machogans.

Which funky head directors? The sleek radials-without-radial ones with crazy offset or the ones with the weird curved-back? Both of those heads are funky to me. I do think the sleek-back directors are some of the prettiest golf clubs ever made though.

The radial looking ones---- The weird curved back ones sit good at address for me.
