Perfect performing but too ugly to game?

Is it just me?

I currently game a 410 hybrid that has almost revolutionized my game - for the first time I can hit a hybrid straight. But it’s so darned ugly I’m seriously considering getting rid of it.

I know there’s a bunch of ’tools not jewels’ guys that’ll disapprove but surely somebody else is as superficial as me??

Please give me your stories. Need to be able to tell my lady there’s others like me to justify a new purchase!

Isn't this site basically built on the 15 handicaps who have convinced themselves that they are good enough for blades or player's CB such as AP2/T100? Surely that has to qualify. There's no arguing that these are the types of players who fit snugly in the category of game improvement but somehow talk themselves out of it because of "shovel" aesthetics. At the end of the day, these aesthetics have little influence on how the ball is struck and flies.

Taylormade R9 irons. I have bought, sold, regretted selling, bought again, sold and so on 3 times now. I love the cavity badging, feel and performance of those irons but every time I bring them back, I remember just how comically oversized they are and I can't play them. Shame really, they are a great product if they fit your eye.

I gamed and loved the Ping Ei1, but had to remove all the painfill to justify keeping them in the bag.

Ping drivers are fantastic but the "turbulators" are gimmicky visual noise. (But I love the matte finish).

Hands-down the ugliest line of clubs currently on the market are the TaylorMade GAPRs. Every time I hit them they perform. But they look so weird (they don't even look like golf clubs) and that awful sherbet color scheme. I just can't pull the trigger.

Taking performance out of it, I think you have to enjoy what you're looking at at address first. Secondly, if it doesn't perform as well as another that you don't really like the look of, can you then compromise for a happy medium.....?

Looks is one the top club features for some players. Personally I think that's kind of dumb but do what you like.

These Pings work so well , but they are sooooo ugly. I'm selling the ugly little gomers. Sweetie, my new hybrids are prettier, but I can't keep them on the planet. Gotta try something new. Darling, I just can't find a good hybrid. There's a unicorn out there. Love Of My Life, I'm buying some Pings. Why, yes, in fact, I do think the kitchen needs remodeling.

I've really been close to pulling the trigger on Ping irons in the past but for some reason I just can't stand the white line on the bottom groove. It makes me feel like I'm not lined up correctly and I can't get it out of my head. I'm sure they would perform fantastic for me, but just one of those things. So I get the too ugly to play thing.

I say it is subjective--- And I will be the first to tell you if I do not like the looks at address I more than likely can not and will not hit it. that changed for me about a year or so ago. I had always thought ALL hybrids were ugly. Now I could tolerate the early TM Rescues to some extent but they were hook machines. I ended up on a bulk trade deal acquiring an older Adams A-12 OS 23* with a Pro Launch Red shaft in it. That thing is fugly but I figured out with a hosel adjustment and some lead tape in the toe to make it anti hook for me. Like I said that thing is ugly but I love it and you would have to pry it from my cold dead fingers. A good friend of mine who is getting up in age but is still an accomplished player and lifetime PGA member told me " It does not matter what a club looks like if you can hit it and it works for you" I had sorta adopted that line of thought previously being brand agnostic but after that hybrid experiment I have also adopted his policy too.

Agreed. From time to time I'll play my Tommy Armour 845s irons. Not great to look at but they perform. One of the best CB irons of all time but and also one of the least attractive.

Yep, I agree. We’ve got a set minus the PW I believe it is in stiff graphite that was passed on to us by a relative, even has the matching 2 iron. > @grm24 said:

IIRC didn't the 845s go from the 16 degree 1 iron to the 60 degree W4 wedge? Imagine that a 13 club iron set! from 16 to 60 degrees!

I’m certain it is not just you. But myself, I would hit a couple of petrified goat nuts JB Welded to a crooked stick if the contraption was something that helped my game.

I just bought the GAPR mid. I see nothing but black from address position.

There are times when the look of a club can affect proper alignment to a player, or even cause a player to change their swing based on their perception of the way the club looks at address. But if the club is just not attractive to your eye, but does not have these alignment issues, and you admittedly hit it well, I just can not see why you would take it out of play. Especially when you admit you have a history of struggling with hybrids. What are the odds of finding a second "unicorn" hybrid quickly?

Lots of love/hate for the 845s.

I had 2i through W4, minus the gap wedge, when I stopped playing mine. After a while I just couldn't stand looking at the offset.
