Why does golf continue to have a dress code?

Quite a few years back i went to play on a public course and got turned away because of dress code.

I was wearing a typical collared golf shirt, golf shorts, with a nice belt.

I was told only long leg pants were allowed....no shorts.

So i responded by asking "so if I go home, and grab a pair of jeans, I can play" He said yes.

So jeans were okay...golf shorts not okay.

I never played there again.

It’s a game for all. Gentleman’s game? Cheating in lpga q school and the person who reported the incident caught flak. People need to get over themselves.

And yet Quinn-Emanuel couldn't be more different (they wear shorts and tennis shoes to work). They've managed to do okay for themselves as a firm...

Any time an employee would ask about the dress code, the partners made clear that the suit was the required uniform. It promoted a certain amount of professionalism and civility that might potentially be lost in a more "casual" environment. It harkens back to the old Crash Davis line from Bull Durham. "if you dress classy, you'll look classy, and you'll be classy.". I've always assumed golf dress codes were intended to support the same notion.

A fact which harkens to the rest of my Crash David quote:

“Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes .... If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.”

Point is, when you make it to “the show,” you can wear whatever you like. QE has certainly reached “the Show.”

That said, even QE requires attorneys to wear formal business attire when appearing in court or meeting with certain clients. Sort of like permitting jeans and a t-shirt for the driving range, but requiring slacks and a collared polo on the course.

It is most certainly not a game for all. Nor was it ever intended to be. The undesirables have pushed their way in, but there are still bastions of austerity they will never permeate.

Enclosed Cognition: We introduce the term “enclothed cognition” to describe the systematic influence that clothes have on the wearer's psychological processes. We offer a potentially unifying framework to integrate past findings and capture the diverse impact that clothes can have on the wearer by proposing that enclothed cognition involves the co-occurrence of two independent factors—the symbolic meaning of the clothes and the physical experience of wearing them.

Seems pretty simple to me. Most professional sports have uniforms, in order to keep golfers coming out and playing in a clown costume, some sort of rules need to be on the books. However, shorts should be acceptable attire, not just in a practice round. If you're talking about private clubs enforcing a dress code on its members just to use the range, I can't say I feel bad for those fortunate enough to have that problem.
