Cleaning gloves in washer?

Recommended Posts

I have had mixed results when I put gloves in the washer. No matter what don’t put them in the dryer just let them air dry.

Did not get very good results from putting them in the washer. However, I have actually washed a few by putting my hand in the glove, dampening the glove, then using liquid dish detergent and a soft brush cleaning the glove. Rinse it off well and then put it in the dryer for a few minutes but not enough to get it completely dry and shrink it. Put your hand back in the glove to open up all the fingers, take it off and then let it air dry on a towel. I use MG gloves and this works very well for them. Other gloves I have tried...not so well.

I usually wait till I have 3 or 4 funky ones then wash them by hand. I use a large kitchen bowl, hot as will come out of the faucet tap water and dish soap.

Turn the gloves inside out and place in bowl with hot water/soap and let soak for a minute until it's cool enough to safely stick your hands in. Squeeze gloves together and stir about for a bit.

Turn gloves back to right side in and repeat the process once or twice with clean hot soapy water

Squeeze soapy water out and add cold water squeezing and stirring a few times repeat process again making sure water is clean of soap.

Clip on hanger to dry. After a few hours I put my hand in the gloves to stretch them back out a little than hang to dry the rest of the way

It's kind of a process but I usually just do it when I'm giving my clubs a deep clean and giving my bag a once over. Usually wash them a second time before they become range/practice gloves

As someone who's hands sweat pretty good in the summer it helps me to get gloves lasting more than a handful of rounds and feeling wasteful just throwing them away

This. Also clean your grips!

I remember seeing washing instructions on the back of Titleist Players glove packet and thinking who in their right mind washes a golf glove. Surely by the time that it is dirty enough to clean, it’s done.

During my high school and college days, I used to play catcher on our baseball teams. For extra padding, along with a kitchen sponge inside of my glove, I used to wear two batting gloves. I can't count the number of times that I inadvertently left those gloves inside the back pocket of my baseball pants, only to have them go through the washer & dryer. If they fell out of the pocket in the washer and didn't make it into the dryer, they would be OK. But, if they made it into the dryer, they would come out looking like a miniature mummified hand.

It looks like [Footjoy's recommendation](https://www.footjoy.com/community/discussions/f/12/t/9774.aspx "Footjoy's recommendation") is to wash gloves by hand with water only. First, with your hand inside of the glove (like washing your hands, then filling the glove with water, then swishing is around in a water filled sink. Remove excess water by pressing it in a towel and then let it air dry.

I have the Kirkland Signature gloves which have been very durable. Like Rick above, a clean glove is a feel good thing. Mine go into the washer and the dryer on air dry and they come out looking like new. I've probably played 60 rounds this year and am only on the second glove and washed the first at least 5 times.

I play close to 200 rounds a year. I rotate two or three gloves throughout the year, and they have worn out before I worry about cleaning them. The only gloves I have ripped were the MG gloves. Usually, the velcro strap wears out before the leather does.

Where do you live? I live in SE Texas and the 100* heat and humidity is tough on gloves. Maybe I am just a "dirty" golfer. From June thru September, gloves are constantly wet with perspiration and/or early morning dew. I just don't like looking at a dirty palm on my glove(s). And, yes, I do clean my grips often.

Tried using third rack of dishwasher last night... glove came out ripped in 3 places. No idea how it’s possible but it happened

Put the glove on and take a terry wash cloth ( white ) and soak the wash cloth with cold tap water. scrub the glove with the wet wash cloth until the grip residue and dirt and grime is removed. Flat dry on a towel. This will give your glove new life...... Repeat until the gloves used up.

I wear Bionic gloves, and the company actually puts washing instructions on the website. I've had very good results washing the all leather Bionics on the delicate cycle in my front load washer, and then air drying as per instructions. Before I wore Bionics, I had tried washing other brands the same way, usually with much less satisfactory results.

Interestingly, Bionic says NOT to wash the glove they make with a black leather palm and a synthetic back, which is the glove I wear in hot weather. Not sure what goes wrong if you do wash these, but haven't really wanted to find out.

Ironic because I wear the black ones and put them in the washer all the time to get some of the dirt off of them. I then put them in the dryer on low heat making sure to not dry them out all the way and then put my hand it them while they are slightly damp then finish it off by air drying them. They lose a little bit of their tackiness but it is better than just letting them be dirty as sweat and dirt will surely wear them out faster than some soap and water will. Also by the time my glove is dirty enough to need to be washed I will have rotated it to being a practice glove. By the time it would be ready for a second washing it is usually worn out and I get rid of it but I found the most important thing is to not dry them too fast.

Bumping this because I found a great way to clean gloves without putting in the machine and its gentle but effective.  The cleaning solution is 1 part Woolite (or dollar store wool cleaner) and 5 parts distilled water in a spray bottle.  Spray on to the dirty areas and use a toothbrush to agitate the stains.  This cleaning solution is something I read about for cleaning the leather car interior.  I've used it on the leather seats of my SUV and it works great so I tried it on my Srixon glove and it worked very well.

The only gloves I've had success with washing in the washing machine (just throwing them in with clothes) are the Dynagrip Elite gloves from MG Golf. When they come out of the washer, I reshape them and let them air dry. Once dry, they are almost as soft and supple as they are when new. I only do it once with a glove, but it extends the life of a glove that is already a great bargain.

RickK had the right method.

A long time ago, a buddy thought he would dry his wet glove quickly by putting it in the microwave.  It came out perfectly dry.  Only problem was that it was about 1 1/2" in size.  We laughed for quite a while.
