Jason Day

So for the second time in my life I have been lucky enough to walk 9 holes with Jason Day during a Monday practice round (today at Mayakoba). I will admit I enjoy watching these guys prep on Monday and Tuesday more than I enjoy watching the tournament rounds live. But watching Jason get ready for a tournament and do his work on Monday's is such a cool experience to me. How often do you get to follow a player like Jason Day and be within 5-10 feet of him on most of his shots (barring those piped down the middle of the fairway). Both times it has been Jason, his caddy, and tops of 3-4 other spectators following him on a Monday morning.

I don't try and talk to him or start a conversation, he is working I respect that, but the random stray first tee ball that I can throw to them in fairway, etc. and get a thanks mate, etc, is just cool to me. The thing that impresses me the most is both times he has said thank you to me for following him while he works at the end of the practice round.

Jason is a class act, I strongly recommend to anyone who ever goes to a practice round where Jason Day is playing to follow him and watch him work.

Just my $.02.

I'd love to do this

here in australia, when the guys come back to play at the end of the year i often go to see them, but i've never been up close and personal walking the course etc during a practice round

got to follow adam scott and ricky fowler a couple of years ago on the saturday which was awesome, but super crowded. watching their tee balls and hearing the contact etc up close really is something else

Jason is a really nice guy. I met him at the 2014 PGA Championship and he couldn't have been nicer to me and my friends. This was before his breakout year so no one else was really around and he could've easily just ignored us, but he walked up to us at the ropes on the range and just started chatting.

One of the young guys that works in our cart barn (and a good stick himself) met Jason this spring. They were at a Starbucks when they ran into him and talked to him for a few minutes. They said he as down to earth as any normal dude, friendly and personable.

Awesome experience, thank you for sharing it on here. I have never had the chance to watch Jason Day much, but a few years go at The Open on the Monday there were 5 or 6 of us watching DJ and Brooks in a practice round. It was early and got more crowded as the day went on but neat for them to be out there grinding and then coming onto a tee box and saying something as simple as “good morning”.

Yeah my first time was 2013 at BMW during Fedex Cup Playoffs at Conway Farms. Was literally Jason, caddy, me and one other guy.

Hoping to get to do it again today. When he finished yesterday, I did ask him if he was going to play today and he said yes and at about the same time, so fingers crossed.

Believe it or not Ian Poulter is great to walk a round with. He's one of the best pro's i've ever seen in pro am's and how much he interacts with his playing partners and the crowd.

Except when your wife tries to get him to sign something real quick and he keeps walking 20ft past her and throws the item back at her.

Really good players can earn a lot from watching someones prep-work for a tournament just as much as their play during the tournament. Awesome stuff

It's time for Jason to get another Major. Get that iron play in order and he's golden. SG approach dropped a lot compared to his prime 2015-16 years.

Jason’s agent, Bud Martin, a Burgher, is a close friend as both of his parents and he were patients of my Father, so I got to meet him long before Jason entered the picture, however through him, Maddie and I have gotten to meet, get to know and Play with Jason when he’s been in town, both for the past Open and then when he’s passed through a few other times. His wife, Ellie, is a gem also.

He, Jordan & Rickie are the three Classiest “young” guys, from say, 25yo to early 30’s, that I’ve gotten to spend any time with.

At different times, both he and Jordan spent a good amount of time with Maddie and her lil guys at her group lessons, when they definitely didn’t have to, and it was funny cuz a lot of these kids didn’t know who he or Jordan were, except that they could hit the ball “really really far,” lolol.

Jordan was a lil more reserved however when I had Jason and Bud over to our club to Play, he Played in our Swat, won a couple of hundred bucks and then gave it all back in tips to the locker room guys and the bartenders in the mens’ card room. He gave his caddie a buck and a half, which is about twice what the average member would have given him. Very generous Gentleman!

He Played pool with a bunch of us and fit right in with the group, as we sorta raz each other and he made a few quips that had us cracking up.

Super Guy!!

Great thread??!!

Not quite about Jason Day, but wanted to wrap up our 2019 Mayakoba experience.

Unfortunately Thursday got rained out, but my wife and I got to watch some golf before we left on Friday morning. And let me tell you, I have never heard a story like this or had my wife ask me so many golf questions in my life.

So Friday morning we had until about 10am that we could watch the tournament. My wife wanted to do some beach yoga before we left on our last morning, but I wanted to watch as much as possible before we left. So I left the room at 7am to get to the course and start watching who I could until Ancer, Kucher and Finau teed off (got to watch them for 6 holes), it was great Ancer made 4 birdies in a row and the locals that were supporting him were fun to watch.

Now for the real story of all stories. So my wife finishes her beach yoga near the 4th green then has breakfast at the restaurant right by 4 green. She wanted to just watch golf while she ate, but sports networks had setup shop and blocked the view, so she finished eating and walked over to watch people tee off on 4 tee and hit approach shots into #3 (keep in mind she is by herself I showed her this spot with Jason Day since we figured this would happen and she would not want to walk with me). She does this for a while and then is getting ready to leave so walks to 4 green to watch her last group hit tee shots. By this point she says she was getting good at following the ball and being able to tell if the shot was going to be close. She tells me she sees a shot, it looks really good then realizes it is very good, then boom, lands 3-4" short of pin and goes in (Cameron Tringale) she is the only spectator on the hole, even the volunteers were not paying attention. She cheers and the everyone looks over. At this point the volunteers are talking to her asking her what happened etc. She said she was going to leave after that group, but because the volunteers were asking her questions she stayed for the next group. Then pure craziness. Chase Seiffert makes a 1 in the very next group. This time the volunteers were paying attention. She said it was crazy, same shot 3-4" short and in.

So long story short, my wife the non-golfer gets to see back to back 1's at her first ever PGA tour event and other than volunteers, players and caddies, she is the only spectator on the hole.

Great week, great stories and memories.
