With leaves all across the fairway, I can loose a ball that was hit straight down the middle, so I have about 20 in my bag :)

My first round of golf I lost 13 golf balls (my own dozen and one my dad gave me). Now that was 27 years ago, but that said I have always kept at least 15 balls in the bag since.

Funny story a guy I work with had a pipe leak in his basement and it soaked his bag so he cleaned it out to let it dry. He somehow had accumulated 130 golf balls! He now keeps a closer eye on the number of balls he carries.

I'm in the 2-sleeve camp as well.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Probably 9 to 12.

But here is a story about another ranger. I play with this guy all the time and after every round he always wants to be driven behind the clubhouse to the fence by the parking lot. I tell him every single time, "you are the laziest golfer I know", as this saves about 25 feet of walking. Well one day I drive around to the fence to drop his bag and while he was in the clubhouse I figure I'll be a nice guy and walk his bag to his car. Normal looking carry bag. Well, it must have weighed 50 pounds, as I discovered he had like 200 balls stuffed in every possible place.

When I play with him now, I always ask on the first tee if he brought enough balls.

I've usually got a couple sleeves of new/newer balls, and a random number of older balls in a lower pocket, usually carrying 12-15 total.

My wife, though... The 11th hole on our home course is a par 5 that has about a 50-yard water carry leading up to the green. It's the number one handicap hole for the women, as they struggle both with the distance and the water carry. My wife has only been playing for a couple years, and is actually getting to the point of being half decent, but she still struggles with the forced carry, so every time we find a ball on the course, I give it to her, and it becomes known as an "11-ball".

We were travelling with our clubs recently, and when I went to pick up her bag, it felt at least 15 pounds heavier than mine, so I start going through it. I clean out my bag fairly regularly, and just assumed she was doing the same, as she's a bit of an organization/anti-clutter freak. Nope, not in this case. After pulling all the balls from her bag and throwing them in a bucket, there were so many I had to take the time to count them.

There were 189.

I buy balls by the dozen, as do most folks. When I get down to 4-5 balls remaining, I will buy another dozen. So at any given time, I will have between 4 to 17 balls in my bag, depending on how recently I re-upped.

My wife who just recently started playing will have however many balls she can find in there, plus the random balls we've bought her. At the course we usually play, there is one particular marshal that will give her a gallon ziplock bag full of balls he has found while out on the course every time we see him. I think she has 2 of them in her bag now, along with a dozen new balls and probably a 12-15 random other balls. She still loses quite a few balls per round, so the more the merrier.

Since I walk and carry, I want to keep my bag as light as possible. I also grew up playing with my brother, who went on to be a + handicap and played the mini tours for awhile. He used to make fun of me for carrying anything more than a sleeve.

On my home course, I can confidently walk off the first tee with no more than 2 balls in the bag and one in play. For away courses, I limit myself to six balls maximum. If I loose more than that, I shouldn't be playing in the first place.

I'm mental and feel like I can't start a round with less than 12 in my bag, even though it's rare for me to lose more than 2-3 on a really bad day. If I'm by myself just practicing, I might "force" myself to take only 8 (I usually carry or at least use a push cart).

If I lose any on the front 9, I'll stop at the car and top back up to where I started.

I'm such a head case. :D

I start the round with 6 or so “new” ball meaning pristine ones. I don’t lose many but when they scuff (even a little) I put them in a bottom pocket which I clean out when I notice my bag getting heavy.

2 sleeves -- if I ever run out in an 18 hole round carrying six golf balls, I don't deserve to finish that round!

... I almost always use my remote controlled cart so a dozen new balls and 6 shag balls of a similar type, meaning a urethane covered ball. I normally don't lose any to 2 max during a round. But I have played a new and unfamiliar course in very windy conditions and lost quite a few. I like to keep 6 shag bag balls in case I want to hit some extra shots during a practice round. If there is a shot that demands a high cut from 210 with a deep bunker guarding the right side with water right, I will not attempt that shot because of the obvious danger. But I might drop a ball and attempt it after I hit my shot during a practice round.

I start with ten gamers. As I find balls I throw them in the big lower pocket. Eventually the bag starts getting heavier and there will be 65-100 balls in there and I will empty it out and start over. I have a giant old leather Burton Bag so I could probably fit 200 in there.

When I used to walk I would only carry six balls.

6-12.

I don't generally lose a lot of balls, so I don't really think about it.
