England courses/Sunningdale ...

Recommended Posts

quite easy to daydream about this trip ...

quite easy to change plans virtually every day ... i've actually changed plans again ... it's like a rabbit hole, though i honestly think i'm just about finished with the itinerary ... waiting on a word from two courses ... it's exhausting! ...

would like to say a huge "thanks" to el gringo ... he's one of the reasons this is a fabulous golf forum ... knows every course in the isles, apparently, and has a picture of each one of them, and is willing to take the time to post them and give information/advice on trips ... would be great to meet up next summer and let me buy a meal/pint ...

well, when i said i'd changed it again, i actually meant i had changed it from the decision to stay south ... i've now foregone the southern section, and Deal, and have been given spots at Alwoodley, Ganton and Woodhall Spa ... waiting on confirmation from Notts, and will work in Beau Desert at the end ... that would be for the first leg of the two weeks ... train to B'ham after landing, then take a rental and loop up, over and down to Spa before heading back to B'ham and BD for a day, then out to other places ... have decided to dismiss Deal ... thought i should set some limits on fees, and Deal's proximity to St Georges inflates their fee, imo ... am still looking at Porthcawl, but am interested in adding Burnham & Berrow ... can't get out to Pennard easily from Cardiff ... not quite sure as of yet about the 2nd leg, but the first leg is set ... all inland, no links (though I suppose ganton is fairly close the middle) ...

duffer is correct in that Notts is more of a championship style course on a massive property in that it is much longer than Beau and I believe they allow visitors to use the medal tees (but check). This course length makes it much more well known than Beau Desert which is probably close to 1000 yards shorter when comparing back tees. The use of the hill on Hollinwell's boundary side of the course is excellent and there is a good variety of holes. However, the greens are no where near the interest of Beau's and for this reason I would say the two are basically in the same quality ball park which is very high. It is interesting that both courses are in the mist of trying to recover their more heathland elements.

I can't disagree that Deal's fees are boosted by Sandwich, however, that in no way diminishes the quality of the course. Deal is for me a very comfortable top 15 GB&I course....truly world class.

That said, your choices aren't wrong! Still, I would encourage you to see the odd wee course or two. If you decide on Notts, BD or Burnham give me a shout, maybe I can join you for a game.

Happy Hockey

Quick one because I am totally ignorant on England golf....are these all open to the public? I am making a trip next year and will go a week before everyone else to play.

Everyones inputs and pics have been invaluable so far.

yes ... same as in scotland, just about every course is open to the public, though i'd say there are fewer tee times available than in scotland, for the most part ... not necessarily a lot fewer, but with a bigger population, each club has more members and doesn't have to subsidize as much as in scotland ...
