Ballooning Drive after Driver Change

Hello folks. Would appreciate any quick suggestion. I have been using a now ancient 15 years old TM R03 9.5* Stiff until a few months back. Then grab myself a Mizuno JPX EZ from an on sale rack. It comes in 10.5* with R flex. No I didn't get the fitting.

 

Now all my drives balloon with height same as 8 or 9 iron. The ball drops with virtually no roll. I'd be lucky to roll more than a few yards pass the drop location. My SS averages high 90s with carry around 220-230, these are measured using personal Flightscope MEVO. I did change my swing recently hitting up more than I used to. My old driver never balloons this badly unless I totally miss.

 

I can dial back the loft as the club head is adjustible. Though I doubt if one degree of static loft would matter that much with ball flight. I am suspecting the shaft might be the problem. Any suggestion?

Too light of a shaft can also affect launch. I tried dialing back a 910d2 but made things worse. Result wasn't lower at all, just spun way more.

The number one factor in the launch and spin you get is actually not loft, but rather face impact location. So when you do have a launch/spin issue, the first thing you need to do to find out what you need to do to fix it is to get some foot powder spray or impact tape and find out where your face impact location is and (just as important) how consistent that impact location is.

 

When the problem is the face impact, the solution is usually to work with playing length and maybe shaft weight/swing weight. Howard's DIY fitting tutorial can help a lot to improve that face impact location issues. And all it takes is some time on the range, and some lead tape. Also, for some, ball position (forward/back) and tee height can have an effect on that face impact location so those are other things to consider.

Once you get the face impact location addressed and fixed, then you can start looking at loft as a possible tweak if there are still issues. But the second factor is really the dynamic loft you deliver, which isn't the same as the static loft of the head. Messing with the static loft can possibly help a little but it usually wont correct for a big change in delivery when compared to a previous driver you used. Those bigger (and relatively sudden) changes to dynamic loft are more typically related to some other difference in the club compared to a previous driver and more commonly would come down to: 1) playing length 2) shaft weight 3) swing weight, and maybe even 4) the shaft stiffness feel. And in your particular case, all 4 could be very different from what you were playing in the older club.

Wow... that's an awesome explanation. Much appreciate. Will do what you suggest. All four foctors you identify definitely contribute. The new driver plays longer, much lighter weight overall, smaller swing weight, and finally much softer shaft flex.
