Tree Roots

Agree with some others. If you are in a money game or match then either take a drop or try to punch it out. If practice just kick the ball away from the root and move on. It's NEVER worth hurting yourself for 1 shot as an amateur player.

Just thin the thing intentionally? Recovery shots are an integral skill to the game

Might as well hit off the cart path too instead of moving the ball..... Swing that brand new 220 dollar wedge into that broken concrete.

Under this guideline, if your drive is headed out of bounds, hits a tree and ricochets back in, do you have to throw it back OB?

Absolutely not. I will gladly take as many penalty strokes as necessary to avoid that again. By the time my wrist felt better it had already snowed twice, can't be missing out on a season that is already too short.

Youd think a player like Spieth who sprays it all over off the tee, would have such an integral skill

It is a good way to keep the abs in shape and to work on your body rotation!
