Taylor Made TP5X ball

I've been playing the 2017 Taylor Made TP5X ball and like it. I stocked up during a sale and now need to replenish. How does the 2019 TP5X compare? Feel, spin, distance, other? Thanks.

 

I listened to the podcast from the Spy Guys with Dean Snell. One question he was asked was if there were no Snell balls what would he play and he said TP5X. Another question posed was if the 5 layer design is so good how come no other companies use it and he said the 5 layer design is well patented and thus protected for about another 10 years when it expires.

TP5 has a thicker urethane cover, therefore spins more and feels softer. I need the spin, so I go TP5.

OP -- I am finishing up with some previous gen 5Xs, and also have some latest gen in my bag. I want to say that I prefer the latest gen to the previous (I think it COULD be a little longer), but if you made the balls look identical, I'm not sure I could really tell which is which.

 

So, whereas that might not completely answer your question, I can say that you should have absolutely no qualms with going to the latest gen ball. It's at least as good as the previous, and you might even like it more.

I couldn't tell a huge difference between the two. If I had hit them one after another for multiple trials I might be able to. But as far as a drastic difference I couldn't tell.

I like the TP5 much more than the X. Maybe I'm crazy but the TP5 is much easier to control than the X version.....

2019 spins a little more around the green and partial wedges and feels slightly different to me. I can play both. 2019 TP5 might be the best of all of them. Don't give up much off the long clubs and spins more with the wedges. If you are someone who likes tour ball performance but really needs to cut spin, the 2017 TP5X is great. Kind of like the old Z Star XV's.

Thanks all for the comments. Glad to hear that its pretty much similar to what I now play. I'll keep on the lookout for some sales in the off-season and stock up.

Agree...except it's the TP5 for me. Every round I'm continually blown away how it consistently performs when needed.

I prefer last years models. I think last year's TP5 and X were almost perfect in every way. I was looking forward to these, but these sent me back to the ProV1.

I seem to shred the cover on my tp5x 2019. I thought it was just my newer 58* but I have been getting the cover scuffed anything under an 8i. Irons are 4 years old with about 400 rounds through them. Starting to get annoyed with them

Made the switch to TP5X this year from the ProV1. First ball to get the ProV1 out my bag... I haven't tried the new TP5... but after these comments maybe I should.

I prefer the 2019 TP5X over the 2017 model. It has a better cover and seems like it’s a smidge longer. They are my gamer ball.

@ZA206 I've played versions of the TP5X for the last few seasons. I got the 2019 version as a Christmas gift. Just started chipping and putting with them and they seem noticeably harder and more of a pronounced click with my old school carbon putter. How much of a difference are they on full shots?
Taking these over the current version and Snell Black for a tournament Monday.

My gamer ball the past few years has been the Project(a) and I just tried the TP5x a few days ago. Across the board the 5x performed better for me. I was actually surprised to find I preferred the firmer feel of the 5x compared to the marshmallow feel of the (a). I got a little lower ball flight with the 5x which is good because I naturally hit the ball really high, and this equated to a little more distance. On short irons the (a) was a hop and stop, where the 5x was one hop back and stop, even rolling back a little on the wedges. On chip shots the 5x checked up noticeably better than the (a), and this led to much more confident chipping. Off the putter the 5x had a very satisfying click without being too firm. Durability was fantastic, and the ball survived a full round without any noticeable marks, and I hit several full wedge shots throughout the round. I'm going to compare this ball to the Snell MTB-X next time I play, one of those two will certainly become my new gamer.
