Playing extra ball as a single?

I was playing single the other day and ran into a guys playing 2 balls in front of me. He wouldnt care that I was waiting for him to finish his shots. I would only consider playing 2 balls when it does not affect the people behind me.

I can't imagine that playing two balls would ever be a problem unless there was a group waiting behind you. Then the optics can be bad.

Agreed. A second ball, in your case, had no negative impact.

When I was younger, I would have felt chastened and apologized. Now that I'm older and don't care as much, I would have tracked down the pro, asked why he didn't approach me if it was a problem, and let him explain his logic to me. He sounds like one of those guys that gets a little authority and lets it go to their head. I've never had that problem. If anything, I've had pros watch me hit, tell me to drop another, then give me a tip for my second shot.

I'd ignore it unless the pro actually tells you that himself. A single can easily hit a couple balls without holding anyone up, and you can't post a score anyways so might as well use the time to practice as much as you can. If the pro does tell you that himself eventually, go find another course.

extra balls are fine.......... but exercise common sense..................

 

if i hit a horrendous drive way over on another fairway, i might not even pick it up if it'll slow the people behind. ultimately it won't slow them down technically as i'll catch up to the group in front. but the optics are very bad.

 

don't hit 3 or 4 balls from the middle of the fairway, make huge gouges........ replace your divots and fix ball marks (especially with multiple balls)........... often i hit extra balls from the rough.

 

anyway, it's fine but use common sense. and don't count of playing 2 balls all the time.................never seen a marshall care. but at a pitch/putt in san francisco, i've heard them chastice someone on the first tee from the speaker system.

I was told the no two ball rule 40 years ago. So, as teenagers, we only played one ball off the first tee and one ball into the 18th green. Outside of that, we played a lot of multiple balls. I still do occasionally. But never off the first tee.

Here, in Thailand, if you play 2 balls you must take 2 caddies. Caddy mandatory all the time.

Thanks for all the comments. I have been asked at check in at a course to only play one ball, but that was at elite private courses that I was visiting. No problem there or when clearly stated. Going to have to give my money to some other course for awhile.

reviving... but thats crazy. I will at times have 7 balls in play if its really slow and I am working on something. the only thing that i feel bad about is divots. I am a picker, but working on taking divots now so when i do i try to max at 2 balls per shot.

I play as a lone single a decent amount and virtually all of the courses around here make it a point to tell me to feel free to play multiple balls if I so choose.

 

Faced with this I'd say I was not playing playing "extra" balls - those were all provisional balls. You know, bad eyesight and all. B)

So, unrelated but funny story about hitting free balls. My wife and I (newbies) started on a back nine after checking with the starter. We meet a walker on the tee that we assumed shared our t time. However, after our round, we noticed him walk away from the clubhouse to his car parked of site!! The dude literally paid nothing for 9????

Only on the course as a single can you practice shots that are impossible to try at the driving range. As long as you keep in mind that a group behind you could get closer than a couple of holes.

I played a few balls on a public course all the time. They were either watching you like a hawk or had too much time on their hands. If I was the pro, I woulda applauded you and said ya get some practice time in. I woulda walked in to the pro shop and said tell that pro don’t worry you won’t be getting any more of my money.

It has been mentioned already, I will only play an additional ball if the course is empty or I don't have anyone following me. I will let the group go through and keep playing the additional ball if I needed to get more practice in, if I have anything going on that day I'll only play one ball and finish the round as soon as I can

I wouldn’t worry about it. Rather than making sure you’re not slowing down play I’d just make sure that you’re keeping up with the group ahead. This still should allow you to play 2 balls a lot of times

If it's not interrupting pace of play and you're keeping up with group ahead of you, then it shouldn't matter. If they are now charging per swing then my pocket book is in trouble!
