Bag a 5W or a 3H

Recommended Posts

First, I think someone either is or isn’t a hybrid player. Me, not so much. Tried them all without success.

Years ago, Tiger said 5W at 40 & 7W at 50. So far he has stuck to that line. I’m still surprised at how much I like my 5W & 7W. May switch to F9’s, but that would amount to fine tuning. For me, I often find being able to go high and stop with 220 to 190 yard clubs to be advantageous. (Think trees in the path :-). Good luck with finding what works best for you.

At the long end of the bag, the answer to this MIGHT be to look at what shots you are actually hitting on most of the golf courses you play, assuming that these two clubs give you the same average carry and overall distances. If they are really interchangeable on distance, then your typical usage might be the determinant.

If you would typically be using this club for a specific yardage, and the height of the trajectory doesn't matter to you on most shots, then the 3H is almost without a doubt going to be easier to hit consistently because of the shorter shaft and more compact head.

If you are looking for a club to hit into greens on second shots on reachable par 5's or very long par 4's, then the 5W might be a better choice simply because on comparably well-struck shots, the ball will fly higher and stop more quickly; the hybrid will come in at least marginally higher.

If you are likely to use the club off the tee as a layup on short 4's, then you might be more comfortable with the larger head of the 5W. But if you already use a 3W or 4W for this, you are back to the two choices above.

Reviving this thread a bit. I was real inconsistent with the 5W when I initially got it. I had an extra 7W length shaft lying around with a Titleist tip so decided to try it out with the 5W head. Well it really made this club more controlled and feel like I hit the sweet spot more often. Im amazed at what 1/2" shorter shaft would do but it makes a big difference. I went through the hybrid carousel and couldn't find one that worked.

So for those of you that are worried about control with the longer shaft of the 5W I would definitely try and test a shorter shaft to see if that helps!

If you can find a hybrid that doesn't go left (for us right handed swingers), hybrid all day. A lot of the newer hybrids have setting to flatten the lie.

Like you stated, a lot of utility with a hybrid.

5 wood for sure. Both can be used with no problem around the green, and you can cover a wider range of distances with the 5 wood by choking up. Additionally, a 5 wood is more forgiving and miles easier to hit out of the rough!

Can’t seem to hit a 3W these days. Got a 5W lowered to 17 and a 4H lowered to 20,5. I either play my 3 iron or 4H depending on the course/weather.

I'd def go 5 wood. I'm not a hybrid fan at all, I also just took my 3 wood out for a 5 wood.

I have both a 19* 3H and 19* 5-wood. Comparing the two, I find the 5-wood more versatile, that is easier to play a variety of shots. Specifically, with my 5-wood I can play half, three quarter, or full length shots. Also, when playing from a tee box I like the head size and shape of a 5-wood more so than a 3-hybrid.

Rather than a 19* 3-hybrid, I expect I could get more use from a 22* or 23* loft hybrid.

I used to play a 5 wood years ago. The only issue I have with high lofted woods is trajectory. A 5 wood is a great club, but they just go miles high, which is the point obviously. But I'm in Texas. I agree with some of the others. Finding a hybrid that you are confident you won't hook is key. Which is why my hybrids are 6 years old. And they're not coming out of the bag. Maybe ever. Funny enough hybrids and high lofted woods are typically the oldest clubs I see in people's bags. Forget about distance. For the distances people are using these clubs the best players just want to have confidence they know exactly what those clubs will do. Even on my worst days I know that there are at least 2 clubs in my bag I can count on lol.

Never was a hybrid fan because they tended to be a hook machine for me. That was until I found an older Adams A-10 OS in 23*. It has a little neck and I made a tool for my loft and lie machine to flatten it out some. Also with some lead tape in the toe I all but eliminated the hook for me. Been carrying it a year or so and am satisfied. But I always have my Adams Super S 5 wood in 19* and the old trusty V- Steel 7 wood. Funny thing even though the loft no where suggests it I can actually hit the Hybrid higher and further than either one of those fairways

Agree on the loft selection of what I call a 4 wood. Ditched the old Steelhead ( after 13 years) 13* 3 wood for an Adams 16* which I call a 4 wood. Much easier for me to hit because of my age and shorter swing

@skujan57 I have a tour issue m1 hybrid... lie angle I think is stock at 58* and you can move the weight out to the toe. Pretty anti hook... I just haven't loved it yet because I find the shape a little wonky. I love the symmetric-ness of a fairway wood but I feel like hybrids are just more versatile. They [hybrids] IMO are a little bit easy to hit, too.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I have a 22 degree regular flex G5 I love to hit, I don't "kill it" but after roll out it's about 170. Kind of a wet fart but the accuracy is do dang good. I also have a PIng 400 5 wood which is about 200 total shot and I love it too.

Like you I went with the 3 hybrid and it wasn't worth it. Thin shot etc......

Never really got along with any retail hybrid myself for years- had an old Adams Idea Pro 22* that was bent flat with a Graphite Design GAT 125 iron shaft that played for a long time, accidentally broke shaft near hosel and despite finding another, magic was gone. For the past few months, have been using a Titleist 818h1 21* set flat with surefit weight in fade setting and have been well pleased. With a tweaked V steel 4 wood and this hybrid, lots of versatility in distances and trajectories available, subject to ability of player, of course?
