Left Handed but golf right handed

Been playing golf my whole life right handed but am a natural lefty. Writing, throwing, swinging a bat...all left handed. I'm curious to know who else is out there, if you have any tendencies in your swing, and how your equipment is set up if at all to help you.

I am just the opposite, right handed in everything but golf and swing a baseball bat. I used to want to pull the golf club through my swing with my right hand but I would get in a hurry and not let my back swing fully finish. This would cause a terrible slice or I would get what I call lazy left side and hit a snap hook. However after elbow surgery for tendonitis a few years ago I worked out those flaws because I did not want to repeat that pain. I tried a couple times to golf right handed but gave up.

I am completely left handed and left eye dominant. However, when a kid I only had right handed youth clubs available so started and then played right handed until I was 35. Never could hit a draw right handed and shot in the mid 80's. On the last of a 4 lesson teaching session, the pro suggested I try to hit some left handed. 4 of the 12 shots turned over (the other 8 were bad... and hurt). He told me if I'd give up two years I'd be a better golfer left handed, so I made the switch. 25 years later and the best golf decision I ever made; your results may vary.

Left-handed and left-eye dominant but play right handed. But I am a mixed bag overall — would officially be tabbed as ambidextrous. Write left handed, throw a ball right handed but a Frisbee left handed. Play tennis right handed, play ping pong left handed. Can bowl with either hand. Goes on and on

For me the main impact in golf is setup. I have to make sure I am not aligned right. My instructor told me, “I’d rather you align too much left than too much right, because when you line up right you try to correct it during the swing by coming over the top.” She showed me on video. Also I really line up putts under my left eye and I add loft at impact. A fitter put the loft of my putter at 1 degree and it really helped the roll.

Overall I feel that being a left-hander playing right handed helps me because the left arm controls my swing and I have good coordination.

I have the same exact story. but right eye dominant. 6.8 index and can hit all the shots to be satisfied on most days.. but i always wonder if i had started to play lefty how good i could get. i can time it up and hit it solid lefty every so often, and my footwork is arguably better. I'm 31.. maybe i'll make the move at 35.

I am left eye dominate and write lefty but play golf and do just about everything else with my right hand.

I find that I tend to set up to the right of target giving me a closed stance. I think this has allowed me to play a draw for most of my shots with my swing path going right and club face being closed.

I tend to have a terrible time putting however. I tend to aim right, then cut across the ball to bring it back on target. Any suggestions to help with putting alignment?

Lefty on everything except swinging. Golf right handed and bat rigtt handed. Growing up I only had access to right handed clubs and had watched my dad play softball and golf (he was right handed). I didn't know any better I guess.

I thought about switching sides, buying all new clubs, and taking lessons right out of the gate but it just feels so unnatural now swinging lefty.

I'm about a 12 and usually play with high single digit caps (all righties) . I'm sure to remind them I'm playing opposite handed and to be fair they should play opposite as well. Always good for a laugh.

Naturally left handed. Play golf left handed as well but if I had to start all over I would learn to golf right handed. Learned to use computer mouse right handed & for some reason throw a frisbee right handed.

Stenson is a natural lefty, heard him on the EAL Podcast this week saying it came from playing street hockey. He also believes the dominant hand should be on the top of the club. I found that to be very interesting... I'd love to know how many professionals are in this boat

This is me. Not a true lefty as I write right handed ( sloppily ) but more ambidextrous. I hit a baseball lefty or righty. But lefty for more power. And I dribble a basketball equally strong left or right handed. But technically shoot righty. I eat left handed and caught myself pouring milk into a cup lefty just yesterday without thinking. I attribute this to being raised by a lefty and marrying a lefty.

Things that I know are factors in my swing. My left hand is dominant. My right hand comes nearly off the club at times. This leads to blocks when trying to hit a draw , but makes a fade left proof. I’m also left eye dominant , Which makes alignment very tough. When your dominant eye isn’t looking down the line you tend to struggle to lineup. For me it’s more face than body alignment. I align the face open a lot. So I adjust to what looks dead shut to me and that is square.

I'm left handed, play golf right handed and most things I do both. There is no rhyme or reason for what hand does what for me, fine motor skills are both hands, and say a sport like basketball I naturally dribble left handed but shoot right handed. The list goes on.

I also have wondered if I should give putting left handed a try as my stroke seems better than right handed and I see my lines better. Never got around to buying a lefty putter but think i might give it a go for a few rounds and see how it goes.

Exactly. It is mental hurdle to conquer when it looks closed but is actually square. My natural setup will be right of target. I have much better accuracy if I find a spot a foot in front of the ball in line with my target — as seen from behind the ball, not beside it — and use that when I get over the ball. At address the face looks aimed left to me, but it’s not. One key is to see video of yourself down the target line. What golfers think they are doing is often different from what they are doing.

I'm reverse of you, RH everything but I swing stick objects LH. I think that it makes you have to think about the swing a little differently sometimes... I have to think in terms of my lead hand when it comes to face angle of my club, shallowing out the shaft, etc. I think it also makes it a liiiitttlleee harder to stay behind that ball because I just naturally want to get into my dominate side a little too soon.

Lefty all things except golf. Shooting a rifle, throwing, hitting a baseball and raking leaves. Figured I was I good company with Ben Hogan. If I involve my right hand I hit every thing fat with an iron.

Now I'm 55 and my left shoulder hurts like heck, got an x ray today, they are saying some arthritis, not sure if I can fix that, but it really limits my back swing

I am left-handed when it comes to writing, shooting firearms (law enforcement), and I am left eye dominant BUT I play most sports right handed (throwing arm, kicking leg, hitting a baseball, basketball, and swinging a golf club).

Interesting info. I am left handed, throw, bat left handed, the only sport I do right handed is golf. I am also right eye dominate and people I golf with always say I am aimed right of target.

I have always wondered if I should switch to left handed for golf. But at my age (55), it seems too late to make the switch.

I'm a lefty in everything but writing and golf. I am left eye dominant and I wish I knew the title of the book I read but it had to do with eye dominance and putting. Do a Google search and you'll find plenty of information but it is eye-opening (pardon the pun). It really helps to understand how your eyesight plays tricks on you on the green/course.

One swing coach told me that being left eye dominant was great for a right hand golfer; and vice versa. He said that when you play golf the same handed and eye dominance, your nose comes into vision on your back swing and that you will naturally shorten the backswing to keep from loosing focus of sight on the ball. Made sense to me and I have consciously tried to overcome this tendency.
