Tommy Fleetwood straight arm drill

Smash Factors

Recommended Posts

Back on topic - I find the Tommy "9 to 3" as described similar to Slicefixers "9 to 3" drill. My understanding is that both of these are pivot driven drills to get the arms in sync with the pivot. Personally find this quite useful.

My understanding of the Iteach "9 to 3" drill is that it is arm driven but is also aimed at getting the arms & pivot in sync.

However the feelings and emphasis of the execution of these drills is different

- & for me I found the Iteach one less useful & easy in achieving the sync between the arms and pivot / pivot and arms (from which ever point of view/feeling you wish to approach it!)

yup. here's what tommy has to say on the matter in an instagram post:@tommyfleetwood_1 words on his swing technicallyI square the club at impact by keeping my body turning. There's very little forearm rotation or flip, where the right hand rolls under the left. I see amateurs do that, and it's very hard to control ball flight if you're too active with your hands.Instead, keep your hands and arms passive, letting the club follow your body through impact. That means you gotta keep turning. I want my body rotation to stay ahead of my hands and club, as if they are being dragged. Do that, and you can swing down from the inside and square the clubface without forearm rotation. Even after I hit it, my forearms haven't turned much. This type of swing relies a lot less on timing. Even if you're off, your misses won't be as bad.A drill to get a feel for this is to take a 7-iron and hit shots that go only 100 yards. Do this simply by propelling the club with body rotation. Your arms stay long throughout the swing—like a windmill—but act like they're dead weight. This will help you feel how to square the club without trying to do it with your hands. Big-muscle swings are a lot easier to control.

Thanks for that. Makes perfect sense. And i bet what feels like a half swing (9 oclock) will be more like 1030, and with a perfect, natural wrist set.

you're welcome!

the feel part is probably different for both of us. but for me, the key (at least right now) to making a precise 9 o'clock or 1/2 swing is NOT focusing on STOPPING at the 1/2-way point. when i do that, the momentum of the club propels it a little farther. instead, i get the club moving on the takeaway and let it glide to that 1/2-way point where i know what it should feel like when it's set in the correct position. although sometimes i focus on the position of my right/trail elbow at that point.

does that make sense?

Yesterday I received an email from a Greg Norman related website making two suggestions on improving the takeaway/ backswing

The first was Pushing the right pocket back( RPB) while the second was to maintain the triangle of the arms as long as possible into the backswing

My question is what is the practical difference between maintaining that triangle and the so called straight arm “Tommy Fleetwood drill”?

Yes, 100%.

A little bit of drift from 9 to 1030 is fine id imagine.

Impossible to hit the ball well without transferring weight to lead side - which is what the drill reinforces i think.

It sounds like virtually the same thing.

i don't know, maybe? for me at least, the shorter the shot the less weight/pressure shift from the trail side to the lead side. i.e. for shorter clubs and shots i keep more weight/pressure on the lead side throughout the entire swing.

Anyone use a grip like Tommy Fleetwood where their right index finger is separated and extends down the club shaft and extra 1/2 in?

Yes I grip it like this. I'm sure Nicklaus did at some point in his career and definitely Trevino. John Daly"s is probably the most noticeable. I do it as it's like holding a ball to throw.

I tried this on the range today and it seemed to work fine. No issues... maybe a little more control. I'll keep experimenting with it.

Fantastic video, the clarity, camera angles, music, closeups, backdrops, it has everything, the energy of a body not interfering with the energy of a club, from the ground up.    Going to near the top of my favorite list.

I swung out from underneath myself, from the lower part of my body.   Byron Nelson
