How to implement multiple changes?

Paddy_2_Iron

So......

I've done some research and have identified IMO a few changes that need to happen. (23 HDCP)

First I went and signed up for 4, 20 minute lessons.

I also started to make some badly needed changes.

Weak grip lead hand to neutral

Strong grip trail hand to weak or neutral

Started to really put pressure into my back hip without swaying.....

Firing hips left focusing on a circular motion

Really focusing in on left hand takeaway, even though my lower body initiates.

LOTS of changes. I was thinking about just focusing on lower body now and but then thought WHY?! I want to get it all right.

So what do you recommend?

Not sure if this will work for you. I took lessons from Mike Austin, in retrospect he was very protective of his intellectual property and didn't really want to make his swing easy to learn. It took me a long time to figure out what he was actually doing with the golf club. I found out the best way to learn his swing is to separate the hand action from the pivot then sync them together. This accelerates the learning process for his swing from weeks or months to days.

You can isolate grip work by putting in a portion of time away from the course. Practice applying it within your normal routine without having to look at your hands or the club and only checking it when you’re about to pull the trigger. When the grip becomes second nature, bring it to the shortgame area for shots where that attachment is required. After a number of sessions where adjustments prove no longer necessary, only then should you work on the other areas as your old grip influenced your footwork and hip movements. Cheers.

Have someone get you into a good setup posture and decent grip then practice that in front of a mirror frequently. learn consistent ball position Practice that too Can do these things a lot at home

park all those thoughts you have in the closet they serve you no good - firing hips is a start down to swing hell.

research the instructor. Who do they teach, who are their successful students - any top ams, juniors, pros? If not look for someone that teaches folks that like and get results. See if they are on Facebook, instagram.

change only one or two things at a time It will take months Be patient. Practice those setup stuff weekly

plan to get 1% better every day.

First, STOP doing your own diagnosis, you're just not qualified.

Second, if you're going to pay for lessons, do what your instructor says. Mixing his instruction with your own Youtube-sourced diagnoses and instructional tidbits is unlikely to work well.

Third, working on one or maybe two things at a time is generally enough. Work on each change until you can do it consistently, then add on the next one. A good instructor will help to prioritize the changes, to determine which thing to work on first, in order to form the basis for subsequent changes.

One or two tweaks (not changes) at a time. Grip is dangerous because, when your working on grip, you can only really work on grip.

Also, so your a 23 handicap, so im guess that your trying to get into the 90s.

To break 100, you need to hit approach shots/Short game solid, limit penalties off the tee, limit 3 putts

To break 90, see above plus, control distance on short game shots, limit putts missed inside 6 feet, make a birdie

To break 80, see above pluss, control direction on approach shots, have a go to tee shot, make 2 birdies.

So when going about what tweaks your going to make, see if they are helping the areas that you need to make game better, not a prettier swing

Oy, better swing mechanics will help anyone's game. If someone interprets that as a prettier swing, fine, but a BETTER swing with fewer offsetting compensations will generally produce improved distance, improved consistency of contact, and tighter dispersion.

I agree with your saying, though tge golfers needs to learn to feel those moves with guidence of their instructor, not just the instructor saying get in this posistion or telling them what they should feel.

Thanks for all the follow ups. I've been really focusing on my grip, both hands and my take away. Seems like a lot of the swing comes together if you get that piece correct. Like another poster stated, I just want to break a 100 consistently around these hard courses in Florida.

Cool post man, thanks for breaking this out. I realize it's just a guideline not a set of rules, but I loved it nonetheless.

I had a follow up and didn't want to post it in another thread.......

Do you recommend playing while making the changes or holding off playing golf until they become "concrete"

Play. 9 hole practice rounds maybe a par 3 course. Don’t worry about score. Do multiple balls if possible.

Driver was money today. 235 carry several holes. <120 in on those holes. I put the ball in the back of my stance and just played my distances with the new grip. It was a lot of fun. Still shot a 54 and 52 (played two balls) but it was better than even. Not a bunch of scrambling etc......

Had two 8's on one scorecard and a 10 on the other. But like I said previously really had a lot of fun nailing the 46, 56 and 60 degree in there.

BTW Does this sound right for a 20 handicap for wedge distances?

46 - ~115

56 ~85

60 ~60

imho it's fine to work on multiple things at once with the caveat that they are "chunked" together. what i mean by "chunked" is focusing on things that have a domino effect on the golf swing.

for example, i know my grip and how/where i apply grip pressure influences my takeaway, how i sense the club head/face as well as its center of mass throughout the swing, what i can do with the club at the top of the backswing, as well as impact, to name a few. more specifically, i've used grip and grip pressure to improve my takeaway/backswing to help prevent over-swinging and make a better transition move. separately, i've also chunked together transition move and footwork/foot pressure.

there are lots of other examples and since many of them may rely on personal feel or capabilities i would recommend consulting with a qualified instructor unless you really trust your ability to self-diagnose and self-correct.

Fix whatever occurs first in the swing. Usually that has a positive effect on the rest of the swing as a whole. Whether that's a setup change, takeaway, top of swing, transition, etc.

Work on that one change until it's as ingrained as it can be (for me this takes 3-6 months), then slowly incorporate other changes, whatever occurs next in the chain.

I've scaled back my implementation with two primary functions.

lead grip and using left hand through takeaway and zone. Helps me keep the club more inside and less muscles mcgee with the clubs goes outside. The body swing. Going hip to hip with the swing and letting the left hand essentially guide the club face into the ball. Only two things I am working on now.
