Giving away shirts for free is a bold business strategy. I couldn't believe it this morning when the code actually worked. I don't even wear dress shirts that often as my company is primarily a 'polo and jeans' organization. But I ain't turning down a free shirt. Glad some others were able to take advantage.

I think there's a non-zero chance of this.

Someone is going to notice they're shipping 10 shirts to the Baltimore metro region for peanuts and go, "WTF?"

Or maybe not. I'd like the know the provenance of the deal. . .why did it exist in the first place? How did it get into Sneek's hands? Did they put a limit on the number of times it could be used in total? Was it intended for a specific group of people and got "wide" for some reason?

It's really the white whale of deals.

What happens on these things is ...basic human incompetence, where one person thinks that someone else will catch any mistakes, and it just never happens.

Example A: The Great True Value Hardware Store 50% off Black Friday debacle of 2008? or so.

In some nameless office at corporate True Value, marketing department wants to try to put hardware stores back on the Black Friday map. Because obviously, when you think Black Friday shopping, you think "C'mon honey,let's head down to the local hardware store!" So Marketing Dept puts their heads together and comes up with 50% off ANY 1 item in the entire store coupon, excluding DeWalt, Milwaukee, and a couple other brands of power tools.

We get the info around in September, and the advertising plan. The Marketing Dept will reimburse the stores for the 50% loss on their invoices with some paperwork. Everyone's pretty excited about it. It was the biggest campaign in years.

It was nothing short of a disaster.

As anything in life, what looks good on paper doesn't translate to real world results. Most things in a hardware store have a healthy markup- Paint, Hand tools, fasteners. You can take a 50% loss on most items and still be profitable. The idea was that wives would come in and buy a tape measure or a tool kit for their dear husbands and dads.

No one thought, anywhere down the line, of all the things that hardware stores stock that might be really nice on a 50% off sale. Obviously off brand Power tools, but think what other stores carry- Pellet Stoves, BBQ Grills, Chainsaws.

So stores are reporting in how great the sale was, and they hadn't had that much traffic in years, and corporate is slapping each other on the back.

Then the reimbursement requests roll in. The money budgeted to reimburse isn't even close to what was actually done, its off by a factor of around 10.

At first corporate kicks back, telling stores that THEY should have know that a pellet stove wouldn't be subject to 50% off, and stores point out that "Hey, this coupon you sent doesn't say that." It goes back and forth till corporate caves. It actually affected the year end results, the CEO had to address it in his letter to shareholders.

Its also part of the reason you don't see many True Value stores anymore.

So if you want to figure out why Mizzen & Main just sent you a shirt for $5 and how that happened, my guess is, someone was asleep at the switch.

aside : OMFG what a day. Both courses were packed. One guy was out there in shorts and short sleeves. I had my July yardages back. And the course has been in the best shape it's been in all year and we finally got a day to play it. 2MoreTerpXtreme was definitely on the 9th hole in a fivesome at like 1:00 PM, so yeah --

anyway, I tell PQ about the Mizzen & Main thing and the first thing he says, "all you guys who got the shirts need to play a tournament against each other." Like Dagoose said yesterday. Anyway, yes to that. That sounds very funny.

I never "take part" in deals unless it's something I already need/want/was going to get (like when OnCores go on sale). Because something I don't want for 100 bucks doesn't become something I do want just because it's 50 bucks, but a free shirt. . .I pay more for cheese cloth, but the difference is I can't wear cheese cloth.

I'm also kinda bummed- one of the cameras in my short list to buy was on a killer bundle deal with a great lens, and not only did the price go up this week...the biggest online camera retailer discontinued sales of it.

That "press conference" he held a little while after where he just apologized to his mom and Notah Begay and other people has got to be one of the weirdest things ever shown on television.

 

I wonder how they figured out invites for that? Who was on the bubble and didn't get one? There were like 30 people there.

I got a shipping confirmation email with a FedEx tracking #. It just says 'label created' though so that could be an automated function. I'll be skeptical until I see some actual movement.

 

I was scouring the internet for Black Friday deals and stumbled across some people discussing it. I am curious as to how many people actually knew about the code. And why the code even existed.

 

I picture a bunch of people sitting around a conference table at Mizzen + Main this morning trying to find a scapegoat to blame for giving away thousands of dollars in free shirts. Janet picked a bad day to take PTO.

Notah Begay basically had to be there, but there were definitely some people there who did NOT want to go to that thing, right? Did he hire people to sit in the back row? I want this 30 for 30.

 

Did they have refreshments afterwards? I bet it was something cheap like a couple plates full of entenmann's mini muffins and not-yet-ripe cantaloupe and melon slices. Maybe one of those fancy water receptacles like they have in the lobby of Marriotts with some old fruit floating on the bottom. And it was pretty close to empty but no one knew who's job it was to refill it so it was mostly just ice and fruit.

 

That's how it went in my mind.

It has always bothered me the top of his shirt is closed up, like the top button is buttoned, but its not. If you aren't going to button the top button and wear a tie then spread the collar out a little. Its like the dry cleaner went starch crazy. That has irked me every time I have seen footage from that press conference.

The middle of the Simmons essay really gets on Tiger for letting Earl down with his indiscretions. I wonder if Bill would write a follow up now after the Armen Ketayan book revelations that Earl may have had sex addiction worse than Tiger did. While it never comes out and says it, the implications IMHO that the Ketayan book hints at is that Earl may have had complications from syphilis.
