Had a guy sail the green behind us this year. A good 25-30 yards .

 

he comes up and apologizes , He also says we were probably cussing him out. I told him no after that shot he was cussing enough for all of us.

The tone of the OP was controlled, and apologetic, so, even though he did something wrong, he probably learned from it, and will not make the same mistake. Not a jerk. Based on the reaction of the other guy, I would bet that is not the first time his temper has gotten the best of him, and he'll probably do it again. Jerk.

OP you made a mistake and were apologetic and offered multiple apologies that is being an adult.

The other guy while understandably angry refused to accept your apologies, that is solely on him. Intentionally, trying to escalate the situation as he was doing is nothing but a character flaw.

There are so many alcoholic, egotistical and mentally ill dudes around the game of golf it is mind blowing. You did nothing wrong.

There are no boundaries anywhere anymore. I see it all the time at my course which is a high end club. Guys treat the golf club like its their alcoholic retreat from their families where they can rage their demons away.

You didn't mention if the guy was hammered but that behavior coming from one stranger to another is problematic and a classic sign of something seriously wrong.

I had a similar experience.

I went up to apologize and the guy starts yelling at me. I apologize again and the guy won’t stop. Normally, this is where I would tell the guy off, but then I notice he has one arm. I was so amazed the guy was golfing with one arm I just couldn’t get any words out. Shanked my next few shots thinking about the one armed golfer.
