A Long and Self Indulgent Exploration of the Latest Irons

Now that I'm past all the odd jobs of the first six months of retirement, I plan to visit the golf shops and just hit this and that. (Retirement miscellany actually led to a **decrease **in golf this summer rather than an increase.)

I used to be pretty systematic about testing out different clubs. At Christmas, I would go online and check out the new models being released. I would actually make up a short list of clubs and print out the early spec sheets. It's been about three years since I did any homework... lately I just stumbled into the expo for an afternoon and that was it.

One thing I need to do is shift to graphite shafts for my irons. If I pick up a club two days in a row, the elbows feel really tingly by the final back nine.

Local golf shop has a set of used Apex CF16 irons with SteelFiber i80 R-flex shafts (85 grams, mid launch). Might give them a tryout this snowy week.

Well, what's the point in retirement if you're going to play LESS golf? Get to work, young man! ;)

I think what might be fun is to go hit all the hardcore GI irons. While I probably did hit some of dad's monstrous Bertha irons, I really can't ever recall hitting anything that would be in that range. I bet it'd be pretty interesting.

Good read. I'm with you on the MP20 MB and MMC.

Personally, I've generally found Titleist MBs to be significantly hard and clicky, but the CB to be nice and soft. However, this current 620 MB, in my hands, feels much more like a Mizuno MB in my hands. I might like it a little more than the MP 20 MB.

One iron worth trying if you do this again is the Callaway Apex MB. But then, I think everyone should try the Callaway Apex MB, so I'm not a good judge. ; )

Great read! I’d love to hear how the CF16’s will compare to the “sad” P790s. I haven’t tried the P790s but have been a fan of the CF16s.

I made a mental error. CF16s available on COP. What the shop had was Rogues in i80. The club felt smooth, and I could handle it probably if my hip clears up. I'm due for hip therapy this winter, have had arthritis on R side for several years. Hip used to tighten up on ride home after round, but this year it started to tighten on back nine.

I'm sliding rather than pivoting on takeaway. Most shots today were misfires. Sorry for whining, I had hoped to be be more upbeat. (I have hit entire Rogue line several times, Rogue and RPro are solid clubs!)

  • 2 weeks later...

Welp. I did it. When something stews in my head for as long as those Mizunos have, I gotta do what I gotta do.

Just placed an order through GOLF USA for the MMC 4-7, MB 8-PW with my specs. Happy early Christmas to me!

There're still some questions at the bottom end. I've actually been hitting the 19° TS2 hybrid pretty dang well the couple rounds I've played with it. Considering the loft of the 4, I don't think there'll be any real issues between that and the hybrid but we'll see. Though there IS some space between the hybrid and my 3W so I just might wind up putting a 5W back in. The 3W gets me a good 235-240, the hybrid is only getting around 210. 5W would fit nicely around 220-225. Granted, it's not super often I'm really trying to nail that distance but I got the bag space and don't wanna change my wedge setup.

As for my beloved Vapors? Probably still hang on to them.

Time to update the ol' signature since they'll probably arrive before the next round!
