Wrist lock putting ?

I have a arm lock putter and many others. I was trying many different set ups and stances on the practice green. My problem is aim and cutting across the ball, for years and years I’ve been a poor putter

I set up square today from 6’ and used my 35” odyssey mallet forward pressed into my left wrist, the ball was forward of center. This gave me the best results on the sbst stroke I try to make. Is this a viable stroke? I’m looking for something before I’m locked up in the old folks home! Thanks

This is what I do. I’ve found that fat grips don’t take away my hands-iness as much as I want. I really only loosen up my wrists past 15ft. I’m much more stable with locked wrists and for a while I struggled with the idea as everything I read says to do the opposite. I dunno.

If it works for you then use it. The best putter I know has the absolute weirdest setup you have ever seen. The ball is off his front foot, stance is so far open it's almost 90* from his intended line, he grips way down on the putter, he leans way back behind the ball and puts the purest roll on it that you have ever seen. Time and time again I have seen him make 15-20 footers. If he could learn to hit greens in regulation he would be a + handicap. First time I saw him do it I thought he was messing with me.

From what your describing my personal setup sounds a bit like what your describing. I play the ball just forward of center and forward press until my left arm and wrist are locked into a straight line. I had to add loft to my putter to prevent the putter from driving the ball into the ground too much.

I’ll just repost my old comments about the wrist lock grip here, as I’m left eye domiant putting the ball way forward allows great alignment for me and a good comfortable lcked wrist as the pic below, with normal loft at impact.

 

Several rounds with a Wristlock grip fitted to my Cameron Futura 2003... and the short review it works brilliantly.

 

Mind you, here's some info that may help you decide if it's for you too...

 

• I'd say you need +/- 3 inch extension if you want to maintain same posture - I have the wristlock bump resting about almost halfway up my forearm (which also seems to mean less forward press required), if you like it lower than you may need less extension to your putter length
• I'm left handed but play golf right handed, and that also means i'm left eye dominant. As a result i'd already found that I putt far, far better and can see the line when I setup with the putter about at my left big toe - so way forward. This kind of naturally gets my left wrist and forearm more 'flat' so the wristlock forward press is very easily achieved for me... without it seems any need to worry about putter loft. For a more normal setup (ball further back) then i'd suspect more putter loft may be needed - but for me, the forward ball position would add loft but then the forward press/wrist lock gets it back to normal... the ball rolled very nicely for me.
• This Superstroke shape is more squared off or rectangular almost at the hand gripping area, but feels fine as far as the shape goes... the usual grip material is to me horrific (slippery and will rot in no time here in Thailand), but the outer plasticky layer is easily removed and will be replaced once I get some more Dippel leather bar tape.

 

Pic of my setup below - like this the putter sole is as normal - resting on ground - so putter loft should be 'normal' at impact, whereas a forwrd press that delofts the face would raise the back of the putter sole up (dramatically so for a wide back to front type putter like a mallet).

I’ve now ripped off the slippery grip material and replaced with Dipell leather tape.

Added two layers of hockey grip tape first to make up the diameter for the slimmer leather tape, and need to add a couple of coats of shellac to seal the twine at the bottom, but it's done as below
